For those of you who ride in the cold of winter (sub 40 degrees), what do you all do to keep your legs warm?

In the past I've layed up, using thermal underwear to keep warm and lined wind/running pants to block the wind, but they are too baggy and get caught up in the chain rings.

Any suggestions?

At this points, I'm thinking one of 2 things...
Sacrifice a pair of wind pants... cut the seams and take them in so they have a much more fitted fit, - or - Craft pro windstopper long underwear.

I wear my favorite P.I. bibs under Specialized thermal tights, OR slightly less insulated tights under a pair of Endura knickers. I can stay comfy well below 40 in one of those setups.

I was looking at those because I could wear them for things other than cycling.

Are they warm/insulated, or just weather proof? No problems with chain rings?
Not insulated but they warm, there is two velcro straps on each leg to tighten the bottom so the chain ring wouldn't be a problem, I am running two and a bash so I don't have to worry.

I have a couple pairs of Ibex El Fito 3/4 length knickers.

They are comfortable in a wide range of temperatures, chamois is great. There's also a full length version that would probably be better for sub-40 degree riding. Currently, whenever I ride when it's really cold, I just put a full length, thin pair of tights on over my knickers.

Thermal bibs. I have a set of PI winter bibs that I love. Though Castelli has these new "water proof" ones, bibs, knickers, tights, and then arm, knee & leg warmers. Have this "nano" fabric that water just runs off of. I'm going to pick up some of that stuff I think, looks like the absolute perfect thing for fall/winter/spring around here.

I was reading about their new stuff on pezcyclingnews. Looks very interesting, but dropping $60 for arm warmers is tough to swallow.

Same here. Last year they were good all winter with just my bibs under them. This year I have a pair of warmer bib knicker I can wear too if I want to be a little more toasty.

Then you'll have windburn/frostbite on the 3" above your tall socks, and below the knickers... :)

Probably not possible to buy, but Blackbottom bib tights actually go up the front, so you have extra wind stoppage.

Thanks everyone

I went with Craft WindStopper Thermal Tights. I have some other craft stuff that I really like, so it was easy to stay with them. I figure I can wear my thermal long underwear under them if I need a bit more warmth.
Nice should keep you warm for long and very similar to what I have. The only thing is because there is no windstopper on the back you legs below the butt can get a little cold in my experience but not that I have my bib knickers I don't think it would be a problem anymore just like you have the long underwear to through in.

Yea... I'm not overly concerned about staying being warm, I just need something to block the wind. A winter headwind at 20mph can be painfully cold.
