Sorry if this is been posted before could not find it in a search.

Our fearless leader has proposed selling 301,000 acres of national forest to raise 800 million for rural schools. It is relatively cheap at about $2700 an acre. I'll be trying to buy some, you might like some too. Don't know if you can build on it, probably only zoned for logging, coal mining or hazardous waste dumping.

Wonder if it will still be 'National Forest' after purchased. I could go for 300 acres of NF for some personal trails...

*edit: Granted I dont have $800,000

*edit2: Now if I buy 100 and you buy 100 and someone else buys 100 etc,... we could have a pretty cool place....

I'm pretty sure it would no longer be national forest. I doubt the property would go for just a few thousand an acre. I'm sure it will mainly be logging companies and developers trying to get their hands on it. I think it is a horrible idea but if it is going to happen I'll at least try to buy some, if nothing else I can bid and help jack the price up for the jerk who finally gets it.

I forwarded it to my wife, but she knocked me down from 300 to 20-30 and even then thinks we would be outbid.

Do you know if any of the trails we normally ride are in any of these parcels. It would be a shame if we lost our riding areas to coroporations that immediately made them private property.

Where can you get a map of the areas?

Well, we have so few places to ride around here that losing a couple is not really an option I'd like to hear of. I'd prefer this didn't take place at all, but if it does I at least want an option of saving some of the land for myself and future generations.

If you want to move to Canada, just go. I tired of hearing people complain about this country, threaten to leave, and then just stay. If you don't like it, try to make a change, or get the **** out.

If anyone has any spare cash, Id recommend donating it to something like the Nature Conservancy about now. Forest is alot better off in their hands than in the hands of loggers and developers. I dont care if I cant ride, so long as it doesnt get destroyed.

That actually looks alot less bad on the map then what I was expecting, but it still defeats the purpose of having National Forests Complete crap.

noble effort, but aren't we spending like $800mil a month in Iraq? Bring the guys home one month sooner and boom, no destruction of the national forest.

Funny to see the Marine Corporal (sgt.?) BurlySurly freaking about trees. Phuggin' hippy ;)

There is a lot of land in Oregon on the block. If they go through with this, I am turning political advocate full time. This is just outrageous. The Shrub must be stopped.

Agreed. Please enjoy our share also:

NC Governor Mike Easley said:
Apart from the stewardship concerns, it should be noted that there are also concerns about the equitable distribution of revenues from this sale. The amount of revenue a state receives is not tied at all to the value of land sold in that state. This means that some states stand to benefit disproportionately from the sale of other states’ valuable natural resources. For example, North Carolina and Oregon both have similar acreages proposed for sale, yet Oregon’s 2006 allocation under this program was more than $162 million and North Carolina’s allocation was $1.01 million. Needless to say, such disparity is unacceptable.

NM has 7300 acers on the block... that's less than 1/3 the acerage of the local AFB here... and it ain't a large one either.

Anyone know a political cartoonist who could sketch up a pic of Teddy Roosevelt rising from the dead beating the crap out of GWB.

Or maybe a pic of Bush urinating on his tombstone?

am wondering what would it take for that...

if w ripped the head of baby bambi in one chomp on national tv... would that be enough? what if he sprouted a mustache and started wearing a red armband? what if he ordered "we will send 3 battallions marching into a volcano pit" and started laughing (like the family guy sketch where peter amuses w) on tv as he watches the soldiers march into the pit?

c´mon, what would it take to convert you.?
