What's the trail status/conditions? Biker/local relations?

I miss my World Cup.

Thanks,

Yo MikeD,

It's the same old same old at ATT except the trails are either deeply rutted out or several inches of deep soft squirrly dirt. The dirt road up top is closed to the public except for locals so shuttling isn't an option (beware Ranger Michelle!).

what a bummer. Very said... I figured that trail would get ruined by all the traffic after the fire. Too bad.

I guess we will have to ride elsewhere...

NOW! Please take notice! This is what happens when a trail like ATT gets too much attention, wide spread word, everybody and there brother riding it, both up & down (up? stupid!) Yes I also ride XC but never at ATT! It was a DH trail. There are more trails like this being built through out So Cal and a few here in SD. But we MUST be carefull how there are disscussed here. Get it!

Ps. I heard BB was already open! Any truth to this?

Yeah, bad news on ATT.

I bet, however, that if everyone had been riding UP and then back down, the history of trouble over the last two or three years would never have gotten to where it is now. You may be rad, you may be badass and way too cool to push a 45lb rig up hill all day, and those "XC guys" may be weenies, but everyone knows it was the "Shuttle Culture" that clashed with the asshole up on top and the cranky neighbors.

Is this an isolated incident with shuttling and "dh style" riding causing undue angst by the neighbors over trash, Kranked-audio blaring out of parked cars and scary-looking warriors in armor and full face helmets? I dunno. Ask the riders and neighbors at Ted Williams, the "PQ Slalom" in Black Mountain or ____________ (you fill it in, but not too descriptively).

When we shuttle, some of the energy we save from pedaling should go back to keeping things cool. A few bad apples in our batch, mixed with a few from the neighbors makes for ****ty sauce.

I have the same sentiments.
I dunno why some people get so stupid when they go to places like ATT. Especially the good ol splay-your-car-doors-open-and-stand-in-the-middle-of-Puetz-Valley-Road antics under the bridge which for some of the same people find it to be in their rights to do so. I find it irritating to go to places that are 'mainstream' bec a lot of clueless riders violate unwritten ethical laws about shuttling and courtesy. Ultimately, it's just a matter of respect and because a lot of bad apples don't have that, we are losing trails!

Hike it, lazy basteeds!!!!

Thanks E and Orven, you guys nailed it on the head about the few bad apples ruining it for everyone, however, I must point out that a few of those bad apples were (are) xc types as well.

All these trails popping up clearly indicate that San Diego NEEDS a place to downhill! But where? Or do we continue riding places until they're closed and just move on to the next hot spot?

I'm definitely not "rad" or a "badass"... or a least not when I'm awake or on a DH bike. But I try! and have a good time...

ATT - dead horse.

We can accuse, blame, point fingers, ... flagellate such sayings as "DH is the only way" "XC is for weenies", bla, bla, bla, but all that crap don't matter. The guys who started MTB were on modified road bikes riding down some mountainside without a trail... Is that considered "cyclocross", "Freeride", or "DH" no they called it "Mountain Biking". Get off these forums and our butts at least more than once a week and ride! Whatever you flava! DH, XC, FR, URBAN, TRIALS, BMX, TRICYCLES,...

For example, I said I would never race "XC"... well I just finished the 24Hours of Adrenalin race this last weekend, our team finished a respectful 7th place. Not bad for our first race. Plus I had a blast! and raced my 32lb Uzzy SL... I'm looking into the "Super D SERIES"...

Bottom line as I stated before...

LETS RIDE! and maybe try something new.

L8R

Ps. for all the SD monkeys - Doing a quick loop at the end of CMB (mission Trails). @ 4:30 - 5 ish today.

I really like the pic from seaOTTER of the guy doing the double on the beach cruiser. Is that FRonJ or metal?.. Now That was funny! AWESOME! I think that sums it up.

Sacrilege! Heresy! I tear my Jelly Belly jersey asunder! You're right of course.

Now this is an issue! Where to find someplace that could be "official", like the MTRP BMX-zone or who knows? Are there any good, public land, areas out east of Chula Vista (in the former Dead Zone)? It seems like everything is getting graded for homes or designated as a Preserve these days.

Last night, I saw a street sign for "Noble Canyon Road", in Eastlake Trails. It would make a great picture for use next April 1st...

Uh, no. It wasn't. It was a biking trail before the World Cup section was built. I think those of us in the fullface crowd drove off a lot of the prior trail users, but we've no right to lay exclusive claim to the place.

Actually, it was just a dirt road that some of us rode as a loop; up thru Alpine on pavement then down Anderson Truck Trail. Fully rigid too! There was no singletrack back then. No Bofus either!

Mike, you could just as well be saying this about TWP or even Noble.

Yep, I could, and I think it's sort of a shame. Would I be wrong?

Calling any multi-use trail (which some of our trails aren't, thankfully) a DH-only trail, just because that's how some of us (now seemingly the majority of us) like to ride it, isn't the right thing to do.

Did you ever get any more info from the land manager concerning the trail plan he discussed at the Noble maintenance day?

It's both a floor cleaner and and a dessert topping! Oops, you'll have to forgive my poor reference to a funny Saturday Night Live skit...my apologies.:D

Anyhow, ATT was both a XC and a DH trail. I've done about as many XC rides up the trail and I did shuttle runs down the trail. Yes, this topis is sort of like beating a dead horse but I think Mark hit the nail on the head...it is the bad apples that ruined ATT's access for everyone and those bad apples come in the form of XCers and DHers.

There have been times I've been out there riding XC and have encountered some real a-hole DHers (and I'm a DH racer myself, so these are bold words!)...but I've also encountered my share of jerk-off XC people out there, too. I'm one of the nice DHer's who will actually stop and let a climbing XCer pass...you'd think I'd get a "thanks" or "how's it going" but I've gotten some pretty damn evil glares and rude comments from a few.

Anyhow, I haven't ridden out there in over a year....all the attitude from the residents and a few "bad apples" just got old...:(

On a positive note I'm moving to a little place way up at the end of peutz valley next weekend. I hope to build something resembling a DS course where at least I'll be welcome. The cool thing is that since it's my backyard where the trails will be and my front yard where the cars are parked nobody can say a darn thing. I don't want to be the bad neighbor and have my home burned down or anything so I am not going to allow a ton of visitors. :(

I rode up to the gate at the top of anderson road a few weeks ago, somebody had stolen a forest service sign off the wire fence bordering the road and stapled it to the gate. It read something to the effect of area closed to all traffic due to fire. The sign next to it was the original sign that read closed to vehicles hiking and biking okay, except they'd covered up the part about biking and hiking with electrical tape. I went past the gate anyways and about 200 yards past the gate some hillbilly meets me coming down the road and tells me the area is off limits like the signs say. I'm wondering to myself what he's doing with a truck on closed land but I turn around quitely and ride back down the road. I wait at the gate to watch him pull out a key issued by the forest service and unlock the gate and I notice he's still sitting a couple hundred yards down the road, at that point I looked over at the chain and realized there was no lock, the folks up there are simply wrapping a chain around the gate so it looks locked. You'd think they could at least put a combo lock on and control who gets the combo.

At least noble canyon is opened for the lower 6 miles.

Hmm, I see I have two bidders, what else can you throw in to sweeten the deal. Honestly I don't percieve having any problems as long as the place doesn't look like big bear during the nationals. We've got enough space that if we had 3 trucks parked in the driveway and 7 bikes in the dirt I doubt that the neighbors would care. We wouldn't be blocking the road, littering, or tresspassing, which seem to have been the major issues (real or imagined) the residents had with those riding ATT.

I met some dude named Brandon who rides 20" alot I guess. Apparently he lived off of ATT and his home burned in the fires. He said that his own neighbors were furious when he tried riding on trails he had built in the area. He only mentioned the neighbors being concerned since the fire but I am guessing that the fire is just an excuse the pissed off neighbors use to restore the peacefulness to their valley. To their credit this Brandon guy acted like he partied alot, I'm sure that bike riding was just one item on a long list of complaints his neighbors had.
