Watchin' you. Writing it all down.
Well that guy is in big trouble isn't he.
I know how to use everything so I'm not too worried, I just think its strange that they are going to test me. I am going to have to change the I.D. key commands to Quark mode though (assuming they ask me to use I.D.)
Don't forget to show'em your angry pirate skills. Every office needs somebody proficient at that.

I still haven't made the switch from Xpress AND I prefer Freehand over Illustrator. I'm becoming a dinosaur.
Oh man I could go on all day about Freehand's superiority over Illustrator. Illogical pen tool function, path modification, not to mention the masking stupidity that is Illustrator drives me insane daily. I carry a copy of MX on every machine just incase I am on a super tight deadline and have to work fast. Illustrator is the devil. However, Quark... I am over it. I still have it but after 1 month of using ID I will not start a project in quark ever (and thats after 10 years of working on Quark). QX has a few things that are more convenient like adjusting leading and kerning while holding the option button, other than that... old news.

:disgust1: Freehand makes me violently ill. I get pissed when I have a client insist on that POS program.
I got mad at my Sr AD busting on FH several years back.

So about 6 years ago I bet him lunch that I could outperform him creating a piece of vector artwork (same artwork) involved drawing paths and making some vectorized type look like it was weaving in and around an object.

When I finished I printed it out and brought it to him... he was still working on all the masking bullsh!t that it needed (about half done). An his file was a complicated mess to modify. Mine was simple pretty and all on 1 layer and could be modified with ease. Won me lunch. He still didnt convert after getting pnewdeified by FH. I guess its all about what you decided to go with when you started... I started with AI but swiched as I realized how much easier FH was to use.

Illustrator was designed by a schitso, now that Adobe bought Macromedia maybe they will lear a little from FH.

I rarely hear much love for for Freehand. Golgi know what's up. I used to do a lot of technical product illustrations and you can tear it up with FH.

It all depend on the application. For cartography Illustrator works out the best for me.

Text, the text boxes in FH are a major PIA. as they lead to cut off text in many cases (IE text boxes are "closed" and you are repurposing a map with a diff. font or size). On a case by case its not a big deal, on a 3'x4' wall map with 3-400 text objects its a F'n nightmare. Text rotation is another annoyance. F13 is the default rotate key, which a lot of keyboards don't have.

Styles pallette......f'n useless waste of time. Build a template and eyedropper what you need in AI. In FH you'd be clicking inbetween the layers tab, the Style tab and having no moniter space to work on the map in the first place.
Color management, I just can't F'n stand it in FH. I just want to mix and eye dropper, not mix, place in a color palette then select when I need it.

Illustrator has its faults too and I actually prefer AI 10 to CS and CS2 (I prefer the point based text engine and we have software we rely on for indexing street maps that depends on this)

I refused to make the transition from QuarkXpress, so I just quit and got a different job.

Oh yeah, and I used Canvas instead of Freehand or AI (for no good reason other than that is what I first used back in 1992 or whatever).

I remember when there were many designers who wouldn't embrace the Mac when it started taking over the industry. I think they're all unemployed and dead now.

I was only kidding about making the transition from QXP to ID, I really quit because I was sick of the job and something really interesting came along.

People loved their paste ups

As for ID... I fought it for a while but I eventually bought it with the CS2 Package. After laying out a brochure in it and getting past the learning curve I was pretty happy to make the swich. Its just a better program IMHO.

One thing quark has though that ID will never have:
CMD + SHFT + OPT + K

2nd interview in T minus 70 minutes and counting. Last interview was with the VP.

The president of marketing's first name is Vane... I am half expecting to be interviewed by a vampire.

Well, that was a long ass interview but It went well. The marketing President is a really nice and energetic dude. TOtal opposite of what you expect when you hear the name Vane. He wasn't a vampire or a goth or a suave dude... he looked more like an IT nerd (take that however you wish). Got along well with him, asked all the right questions gave all the smart answers, had a few laughs etc, etc.

Then it was off to the design department for the test, which was a 4c, 8 x 10 full bleed ad for a magazine. I got a text doc full of well organized copy, a 6 disk set of stock photos that applied to the market and a g5 with all the software that they want me to use. I designed a pretty good ad in the 45 minutes they gave me. Could have been fine tuned for another 15 min or so but I think I gave them a pretty good idea that I can use all the software and I can concept quickly if I have to. I got along really well with the designer chick who is apparently the most senior they have on staff. She's 31 years old (1 year older than me) which means they probably have a bunch of people on staff that are near my age or younger, so hopefully I fit the bill really well.

My only complaint... they are sticking to Quark over there... they have the newest version and really, I am not impressed. Of course I didn't have time to search for new functionality, it does show how inks interact with each other if over layed... that was cool. No freehand either, which was expected... I know Illustrator as well as the next designer, I just think it was designed by a guy with an ass for a brain.

Okay that is all, I'm sure you all are very interested.

... "key" questions.... your positive attributes... (2) ... ".. one reason to hire you ..." ...
Will start (hopefully) interviewing week-after-next, I'm wondering what the questions will be... Hopefully not something like that.

Wow golgi, isn't getting a new job a pain in the neck?
Boy, I surely hope not...

Yes I am - Very...
