So let's say you go to some national chain store like Wal Mart, Home Depot, Target, etc. and purchase several items. While the checkout person is ringing you up, you "maybe" notice that he/she missed a scan of a $50-$100 item, but you're not sure.
Outside, you check the reciept and find that the person didnt charge you for the item. What do you do?

I would just go back and pay for it. I wouldn't want anyone to steal from me so why would I steal from them?...D

If it's a big store...it's their loss, my gain. woohoo! But if it's a small, family run store that I personally want to see survive, then I'll point it out and pay for the item.

I go back and pay. If you need to exchange it, you wind up with something you don't need/want. If it's Home Depot, I am cool with that. If it's Wal-Mart, I might skip.

I never go to Wal-Mart, so that's not an option.

I would look in the sky to see the meteor that was about to strike me as the only time I would be lucky enough to get something for free I would undoubtably be killed in a freak accident moments later.

Seriously though I probably wouldn't say anything as chances are I have been overcharged as many if not more times, it all breaks even in the end.

lol...this logic amazes me all the time...so it's alright to steal from someone rich but not someone poor??...I just hope you realize that in the end you end up paying higher prices to combat theft and property loss...D

I pay enough for my own mistakes, I'm not about to start paying for other people's too.

If I catch it, I go back and pay. BMXdude is right: why is it okay to "steal" in that situation.

However, I also expect the same treatment from the store. There have been a handful of times that I've been given less than the correct amount of change from the cashier. I will politely ask the cashier to check his or her math. If they refuse, the MOD will then get my case. If that doesn't work, myriad emails will be sent to company headquarters (Gawd only knows how many free drink coupons I've received from Starbucks).

nope, you're just someone who got lucky and maybe doesn't have as strict of a moral code as you.
I guess moral play a part...but I would do it more out of fairness...also I don't like paying higher prices because of people having the self-centered not my fault attitude...D

On one hand, I can see why it would be right to speak up, but on the other, I know that these corporations would take every last dime of mine if they could and leave me peniless in the street if it helped their bottom line. There is no corporate conscience. If this was a mom&pop store, things would be different. The mom&pop place no longer exists because of this huge megalomart. Is there a right and wrong here?

interesting question..but I'm of the belief that the mom and pop store would still exist if people supported them. The only reason the mega stores are successful is because people shop there....D

People eventually have no choice. That's just the nature of consumerism in America today. If the megalomart's only interest is it's bottom line, why shouldnt my only interest be mine?

That may be true...one of the biggest things I noticed moving to Canada was the large amount of "mom and pop" type of stores...it seems to work out ok here so I don't see why it can't work the same in the US.

because you're better than them :D

There arent any here.

Used to be cool fishing stores, now we got BassPro and Dick's. Completely worthless.

Cool hardware stores? Gone.

Bike shops? 1 or 2 good ones left, and I go to one frequently.

Since I moved here I have really had no choice...it's taken a bit of getting used to but it's easy now...D
If you can, cool.

I just think people shop where they have the most variety.

No one suffers if it's from some huge corporation, they could lose an entire store of product and still pull massive profits and pay their CEOs seven figures. You might even get the employee in trouble by mentioning the mistake.

you keep thinking that way and they huge corps will just get richer and richer...I was in the grocery business for 8 years. Nearly every major company raises prices to combat against theft and property loss. It's just the way things are done. Most major stores lose more than a whole stores worth of products in a fiscal year....all they do is pass it on the their customers with higher prices.

Makes perfect sense. If the customers are stealing then just charge the customers more....D

So you're saying, that we, the smarter consumers, should make an effort to acquire more goods for free to offset the increased prices?

I'm down with that.

I would consider the $50 to 100 a gift back from the store for all the times I have counted their 40 cash registers while I am standing in line
because only two are open. Standing there behind the "sweatpants" family and their three screaming crusty kids for a half hour.
That is a well earned "gift."

The worst part about it all is that in most places if you made it out the door you would have to go back and stand in line and deal with horrible customer service to try and give them their own money.

I went to homedepot the other day for some trail building supplies, and diden't get charged for 6 lag bolts, i figured since i was low on cash and they have made enough profit off me for a gift of some bolts.

i'd wonder why the "inventory control system" didn't catch it.

then i'd leave and consider it a success.
