fugly.... but hey, function over form i imagine..
i reckon a lot of the coating stuff they tried back in the day failed cos of tech know how. but now that tech's advanced considerably, especially thanks to the aerospace industry's obsession with fancy, heat resistant, low friction, and low weight coatings, cycling coatings can go back to the future to improve on today's offerings without having to reinvent the wheel.
But that kashima coating looks awesome on the fox forks... very seksi..

Prediction: if made available on production forks it will be spec'd only on the several $100 more expensive air sprung WC model rather than the equally good (better?) coil sprung Team so more people will feel compelled to buy the WC.

slipper coatings? yawn . . . seems this come around every 3 years then goes away.:lazy2:

and I think black stanchions, crowns, and lowers is ugly too

rock shox had a slick coating well before Fox did as the showed in that video with the old SiD
no $hit, I owned a Boxxer with Ti Nitride and slippery silver. I meant they will eventually end up with one that actually works and stays on the fork.

When Kashima was introduced on Fox forks I read a long article that went into great detail why slippery silver and ti-nitride did not work well for a fork. I am sure someone can find it.

The fukkin internet Nazi's at work here block everything so I can't find $hit. I am able to sneak onto here through I fukkin proxy but can't see any pics or anything. I just get to read all your dumb comments and use my imagination to create mental pictures of sweet bikes and WC riders rocking the latest boozey the clown/8 year old boy pajama kits. However I did manage to see the pic of Sam's alleged carbon fiber time bomb(joking).

unless they are doing something special, I wouldn't be surprise if the DLC coating chips easily like the Silver Slippery did.
This is Rockshox we're talking about - who needs R&D or even background reading when there are THOUSANDS of customers out there willing to do your field testing for you AND pay for the privilege?

Except for new dampers and a redesigned chassis that looked almost identical but wasnt.........
They changed the lowers in 08, dampers didn't change whatsoever from 06-09 other than to eventually install the correct size o-rings in the top caps after like three attempts.

it basically said that the kashima coating is pores(sp?), allowing oil to easily adhere to it. basically the same way a piston liner in an engine is honed to reduce friction. also said its stronger than hard ano, but that's not the main advantage of it.

Thanks. You refreshed my memory.

That is right, and the slippery silver on the boxxer didn't let any oil stick and it ended up creating stiction.

Did anyone notice the DLC stanchions on the maribor videos? They looked horrible, mainly because they were tinges of blue and gold... oil reflections or fading/wear I don't know.

if this DLC is failing as everyone is assuming based on color variations. (wow), then if the forks get swopped out for the next round, then Kashima wins..
on another note: if this coating survives race weekend, then it works. It's meant for racing folks, not 2 seasons of going slowly.

It comes stock on KX motocross bikes and they wouldn't do that if it didn't last.
that is true, but what you didnt mention is that while DLC is on the lowers, Kashima is lining the inside of the uppers.

of interest, is mention that kashima is used on the alu parts, and DLC on the steel lowers for the Kawasaki. Does it mean one coating is more fit for use on certain base metals? Are the Boxxer stanchions made of steel?

Probally they made a DLC coating suited for Alloy stanchions,on the vital vid they mentioned it's a new Glass like DLC coated stanchions.
The new glass-like DLC coating on the upper tubes of the latest BlackBox Racing project for the continued development of the Rock Shox Boxxers.
So if it was that super bad, they wouldn't done this coating for on their Boxxer stanchions

Ok my turn at wild a random guess.... Could the discolouration on the DLC stanchions be form a combination of a light film of oil annnd the wet weather? We all know how you can get all sorts of colours when a small amount of oil is floating on water under sunlight(dont we?).
Hehe I'm on a roll now...annnnnd maybe the film of oil is from some forks being run without oil seals to reduce stiction even further??? (wasn't that a popular "pro" mod on the pre 010 Boxxer?)

Oh, the black finish was hot. But you just had to make sure it was paired with the right dress and boots. I still miss this bike:

That DHR is smoking, loved that model too, but prefer to ride the last of that gen, though 1.5HT would have been nice

Not sure why everyone is getting so hot or cold about the coating, the guys are testing it riding the WCs not sure how that means we are product testing it when its not even out yet, anyway good to see Sram pushing it, what ever they end up doing, still digging my 2010 Team..:thumb:

DLC coating is a glass like (amorphous) substance, always has been.

To Capricorn, DLC is more suited to steel.
