The Industry puts its money where our mouths were! Way to go, Martin, you truly understand whats needed to keep driving interest in racing. And also, way to go industry, its shows us that you understand too.

Finally some forward thinking. Doesn't make any sense to sponsor these racers and put logos all over them.....and then not promote/encourage the video coverage of them?

maybe instead of donating money we could buy the DVD of last year's season?

I think I'll do that now.

Thanks Martin, and thanks Freecaster (and thanks to all the other members of the IMTTO)

Edited to add: Oh noes! the DVD is sold out. Hey Freecaster, any chance of doing another run? Are there any other on-line stores I can get it from?

great news.

now the next phase: more freedom for camera angles... is that possible? does it have to be limited to the same static locations? is the UCI really the boss of where cameras can be and what number of cameras are allowed?

if so, what's the thinking behind that? if a person can stand anywhere outside the tape, then why can't cameras take vid footage from anywhere a person can stand?

am I misunderstanding the problem?

The UCI is indeed the boss. They pay an independant tv production company to provide one stream for all TV and internet sources.

The cameras are limited to areas you can get TV cables into. Think KMs of cable that have to connect to the live production truck at the bottom of the mountain. It takes many people many days to get cables run and into location, and the cables have a finite length.

That can't possibly be the only way to do it. But at the same time, I understand the idea of being financially limited to the gear they have.

Theoretically, can't someone use a DV cam and portable wireless transmission unit, and shoot the transmission to the broadcast truck at the base of the hill? Cables seem like something from the 1970s.

This is the only way to do it unless you have very expensive wireless equipment and line of site. Or a helicopter to relay. Neither of which are in the budget as far as I know. ;)

I don't think they'd need a helo since the race isn't moving. A decent sized balloon would do and it could fly in cloudy weather too. Not that I expect that to happen, it would cost $$ as well, but surely less than a helo.

I purchased the DVD and I would also paypal a donation for the shows this year. Realistically in the heat of the moment after a fun race I would likely donate a little each race.

Get a donation link going on the live coverage pages!

If the IMTTO can fund the current coverage maybe our donations could be invested in more cameras. If everyone that payed for the first race keep on donating the same amount (or more) at each race it might be possible

A sincere THANK YOU to those involved in making this happen!!!!! Freecaster saved me last year when I was recovering from a car accident and couldn't DH for the entire season. It kept my motivation up and now I'm back in shape for the season. Can't wait see the next race!

Interesting comment by the Dirt boys on their article comments. "Freecaster have the exclusive rights, sounds like they are putting pressure on the UCI regarding other filmers."

http://dirt.mpora.com/news/maribor-world-cup-team-videos.html

If true, I have mixed feelings. Freecaster is awesome, and if they ponied up the cash to the UCI to pay for film crews etc, then they deserve exclusive rights so that they can recoup those costs. At the same time, some of the independent filmers, are starting to produce some fantastic, if not live, coverage. It's a shame to see them shut out from filming completely.

If it's not in the budget, UCI needs to take the wax out of it's ears...

WE WILL PAY FOR BETTER COVERAGE!!!!!!

Consolidate these duties under one roof: Filming, live editing, commentary, broadcast, etc. Subbing work is expensive for the customer (UCI)

News flash - the uci does not give a **** about MTB and gives even less of a **** about DH.
Out of curiosity, is any other sport doing something similar where the broadcast is pretty much web only?

Bit of a shame really. Would be nice to see this footage get extra legs with a uci dh 2010 film or something similar.
