Here we go again! As if Maryland wasn't told in the last election of how many large corporations have moved out of state due to high taxes to go to Virginia, our dumbass Governor has forced another business to leave Maryland! Thanks to Governor O'Malley, another business pulls out of Baltimore!

Even with the majority of liberal sided local TV and print showing under former Republican Governor Ehrlich the state prospered creating jobs and brought in large corporations as well as lowering Maryland's deficit to next to nothing, the same local media turned on Democratic Governor Martin O'Malley showing he has drove out more corporations and jobs, and in just two years created the highest deficit ever in Maryland's history! Mind you, Maryland is a huge democratic state, voted for O'Malley, even with liberal democratic minded local media endorsing the Republican Ehrlich!!

Even knowing Governor O'Malley has raised taxes so high in Maryland, no one want's to do business here anymore, Maryland still voted him back into office in spite of the proof, once again showing people voted across party lines. And less than two months later after his re-election, another big corporation pulls out today siting on the news tonight the high cost of taxes to do business in Baltimore. Here we go again folks! This state is going in the toilet!

Joining Solo Cup, Lockheed Martin, and many more, now the Pepsi plant so many see going down I-83 into the city, announced to it's employees today it would be their last day at work and will no longer make Pepsi in Baltimore anymore. More jobs lost to an idiot in power. When will Marylander's get it? I'm so frustrated.

This divide between republicans and democrats voting for the sake of the party lines is killing our own economy and hurting Maryland. It's really got to stop! I'm so frustrated over it. Another huge corporations pulls out of baltimore siting too high taxes to do business here. This is SUCH a shame. What a way to start the new year for so many people, out of work!

And to make matters worse, an article in The Wall Street Journal last year prior to O'Malley winning a second term states that out of 3,000 millionaires in Maryland, over 1,000 disappeared from Maryland last year alone!! Link below if you want to read it. From the article: All of this means that the burden of paying for bloated government in Annapolis will fall on the middle class. Thanks to the futility of soaking the rich, these working families will now pay Mr. O'Malley's "fair share."

Add the Baltimore Pepsi plant workers to the unemployment line tonight. Such a shame.

States offering low/non-existent high-income and business taxes is a race to the bottom. If companies are leaving Maryland (8.25% corporate tax) for Virginia (6.0% corporate tax), then they'll leave Virginia for S. Carolina which only has a 5% corporate tax rate... And guess what, if Maryland lowers their tax rate to 3% in order to get all of the businesses back, they'll have to charge ordinary Americans (ie, the middle class) more to make up for the lost revenue. And guess what, the middle class will have to take it, since that'll be where the jobs are.......

(no, I don't know what we *should* do, but I can tell you that the current patchwork of regulations and taxes suck)

ask Northern Ireland businesses how fun it was to compete w/ the Republic's much lower business taxes...

whether you like it or not, corporate taxes (and tax-advantaged locations) play a large part in strategy...i would not change the personal income tax bracket but lowering the corporate can certainly help sway business decisions.

Sure it can. But like Dante said, it's a race for the bottom.

How'd the whole Ireland thing work out, anyways? That low tax rate must mean they are doing great economically through this downturn, yeah?

Aw poor pepsi and lockheed. Must be so tough to stay competitive, especially on a meager diet of steady lifetime contracts based on producing shlt that kills people. I really feel for'em in the face of that big ole mean governor.

Intel gets tax breaks here, but Nike doesn't. Actually, Nike turned down the tax break, but also owns a ton of land around the World Campus that they expand every few years.

Even though Intel gets tax breaks, it still moves things out of state and out of country if it makes good financial sense. But they did opted to stay here and build a new fab rather than build one in China. But it seems like more of a PR move than anything, but it has created jobs.

OH HELL YEH! You just moved here and YOU already even know it!! :agree:
You just said the magic woid and you win a prize! Rep your way...

The biggest problem is these large companies supplied thousands of jobs to Marylanders that now are out of work. It's such a shame. We've lost too many big companies and it's becoming very expensive to live here. If this keeps up, I'll have to move to Florida and sell the DH bike for a BC. :tinfoil:

Yeah I lived in baltimore in the late 80's/early 90's. It was way more of a booty hole then than it is now.

I really hate when I get all andy randy, but I can only feel so sorry for people who work for shltty companies. The upside is that maybe they'll find better employers.

To be fair on the other side, I've worked in southern Maryland for 4 years and lived here 1 and the amount of businesses that have grown and moved in here (Pax River area) is huge. MD designated this area a "technology corridor" so there is tax incentive to bring business here. (even though it is the home of Naval Air Systems Command and every new aircraft platform comes through here, so companies have to come through here, too) The income tax rate here is only 1% higher than it was in PA but the difference is services, condition of roads, etc is night and day (MD to the good side) My property tax rates are waaaaayyy lower than PA and I pay no "school tax" yet my kid goes to public school and it's a ton better than PA. Gas is cheaper here due to lower state tax, car insurance is less and there's no personal property tax so it's cheaper to register vehicles. Not to say O'Malley is great but Erhlich seemed like a crook too looking at his record.

Guess it's all in perspective.

Companies do not pack up & leave when there is a tax increase.
Just like they don't hire people because they got a tax break.
It's a business thing. You just wouldn't understand..

Baltimore city's crime rate isnt helping. Nor is the Mayor...or the school system, roads, tourism etc. Just about the only things going for the city of Baltimore are the ravens, the bars, and the future Indy/Lemans race.

I work for a defense contractor in Baltimore County. We hire about 200 people a year to give you an idea of how healthy business is here. Most of the people that work here live in PA because its "cheaper" and "safer". Regarding the county, it too, seems to be getting bigger and bigger each year as fed up businesses flee the city for the county. Not to mention the better environment for business.

I know a couple of people that work for Lockheed in the state of MD. Business is booming for them, between defense, aero, ship building, nano-tech all of their projects sound great and healthy. None of them are in the city though, middle river, glen burnie, rockville... It seems Lockheed's biggest problem is the reshaping of the defense budget, not MD.

APG gets bigger and bigger every year and now it seems there will be even more people coming down to the state of MD due to military base consolidations on the east coast. Both Ft. Meade and APG will grow over the next 3 years.

Though, I'm with you MD's proposed way of generating revenue is fail. An abundance of traffic cameras and slot machines aren't going to get it done.

Yeh I heard about Ft. Meade getting a ton of new people coming in the next few years.

The Pepsi spokesman said they're closing in Baltimore specifically because of the new beverage tax. The bad part is they called their employee's in half way through the day and just told them they no longer had a job. :butcher:

That sux! Imagine some people that might have just bought something like a new car or something like their kids college loan.

And the speed camera's is just another way to "f" the public out of more money. :greedy:

APG is getting 3k new jobs and Meade about 1.5k, mostly from Jersey. I work for a national homebuilder and we have opened a few new communities specifically for the BRAC employees moving to the area. In our newest community 90% of the buyers are from out of state.
