Congratulations on your retirement, Peters! Have you started scoping out retirement communities in Florida or Arizona, and how are the shuffleboard and bocce skills coming along?
JBP seems to be the type to spend his retirement days preventing people from getting on his lawn.

Awesome! Have fun in retirement!
If you get bored, swing by my way. My old roady partner was a retiree who showed me up every ride... I'm sure you could do the same!

Congrats, I'm jealous.

My girlfriend and I did a MTB trip to both NZ islands in November and can thoroughly recommend it.
Whole Enchilada is still my favourite ride anywhere though.

I have never had problems getting away for Monkeyfest, and did my two week trip last year with various riding friends.

If, however, I decided to take, say, a month for maybe a drive out to Colorado and Utar or to wander in New Zealand, or Argentina, I would at a minimum need to find someone to keep grass at bay in the yard.
Your winter our summer.
Your winter, what grass to keep at bay?
Our Summer (January/Feb until mid March) rocks for going riding. ;)

If everything works out I would like to retire at 57 - I know it's wishful thinking but if either kid gets a scholarship or doesn't goto college (I hope that doesn't happen) then I can retire early.
It's totally possible. Figuring out health care coverage will be a bit of an issue: live cheaply enough that the amount you draw down from investments still gets you a nice health exchange premium subsidy?

I was once on track to retire in my mid to late 50's but with uncertainty about health care I bailed on the idea. Then grad school happened and put me behind several years. I kind of consider the grad school thing a mid life temporary retirement, I worked my ass to the bone, but had a blast. As there are never any guarantees with the future if I ever have to opportunity for a temporary retirement again, I would not hesitate to take it.

That and not local. V and I might start the year in AZ.
Try and time it so Mt. Lemmon (if going to Tucson) doesn't have snow. One of the best rides in Tucson is the Bug Springs/Prison Camp/Milgrosa ride. Bug Springs is high enough up the mountain that it can be snow covered this time of the year. It's much better as a shuttle ride, but I found guys on the Tucson Mtb forum to join.

Being retired is the best thing that ever happened to me. I get to do whatever I want whenever I want. My one advice is to have your housing situation firmly in place before you retire. Taxes and maintenance should be factored in your plans. New cars also. Every 10 years or so you're probably going to need a new car. Waffles aren't very good for you either...

Congrats! I've only got about 20 more years :(

Man, if there's anything I could do, it would be go back to NZ to ride more. I got one solid day to bike and decided to ride the bike park in Queenstown, just because the bike rental place was right there and the lift is basically in town. I can only imagine what's accessible by trail.

I would also strongly suggest: http://www.adventureride.co.nz/

One of the best days of my life ever and he literally provides everything from bike/quad to gear and food. All day was about $600US for my wife and I picked up and dropped off at our motel...

Oh and....
