I mean yu probably want to keep in mind that most people go to college during the winter months! If DH is your thing, you won't be doing too much of it for more than half of the school year if you're in New England.
So - academics aside - go somewhere with a mild winter or with rad skiing if...
Considering the cost of medical attention in the present day, pretty much all armor is cost effective. Personally I use the Fox launch upper body suit and love it. Excellent fit and protection. Comfortable too. The best armor I've seen that's not Dainese. Quit a bit cheap too, I think.

Well I'm one of the aformention stunt-haters, but the berms look very nice. It's good to see such solid-looking trailbuilding. Why was this not happening when I I was going to highschool in southern NH? :p
I look forward to making a trip there.
I have a Triton DS that I would sell for $150. It comes pre-loved. Heck I'd still be riding it if I hadn't gotten a pseudo pro-deal on a new frame. It's a nice ride.
I think the best solution for your problem would be to get an old (even blown) Vanilla RC and get teh full factory rebuild/tune from Push Industries. Then you'll hav e a grade-A essentially brand new shock that fits your bike. Heck I'm sendig mine out tomorrow.
