Funky ass motor. A friend of a friend (who seems to have WAY too much money) is always posting up about some JDM Subbie crap pushing 600+hp, they still sound like ass.
There is a guy here whose a big subaru nerd. Sold him mine in fact. He's officially our local "trainer" but it's definitely a part time gig. But he is at the hangar 6 days a week doing some subaru crap on some junker he just bought on craigslist so he can flip it. He's probably moving enough cars a year to qualify as a dealer. When I sold him my piece of shit he couldn't believe I wanted to get rid of it. "They're great cars if you do the head every 120,000 miles" he said. Screw you Larry. Normal people do not talk about cars in terms of how often you have to do the heads. That's insane. /coolstorybro

the underlying point you missed is that those gen cars will otherwise actually last long enough to require doing the head more than once.

lol they do have a funny exhaust note.

I had an STi that the cam chain tensioner decided to give out and let the timing chain jump a tooth, ate the top of the motor, bent all the valves, dinged all the pistons.

To Subaru's credit they fixed it even though it was out of warranty because I had the tensioner serviced 3 times prior under warranty.

Those cars are such a pain in the ass to work on, the techs at the dealerships actually lift the motor off the motor mounts about 3" to change the plugs. Service Adviser told me that when I was there for my debacle.

Sadly I like Subaru's, but I don't think I could own another one after losing the top of the motor at only 88k. :/

I was thinking the same thing on the price, didn't even consider only doing one side. It's a '96 Outback.
lol. Can't believe it made it this long without already having blown the head gasket.

Make sure to have the shop replace ALL the oil seals while they are pulling the motor. And put in a clutch if it's a manual while they have it out.

:stupid:

My '92 Silverado will roll 200k soon and has barely had the oil changed 3 times in all those miles.

The intake manifold has been leaking since I finally changed out the leaky radiator. But everyone knows a solid 5.7 will run for 300k+, too bad it only gets 14mpg.

Well there's the problem, no turbo. IIRC, only the non-turbo Subaru's use the shitty felt/paper gaskets.

Still not sure it is worth the effort. Better off getting him a Civic for $3k that he can drive until the timing belt breaks.

It's catching on - imagine removing ALL that liability from the books. Works in my favor - probably other folks... not so much.
It only works for employees who have passed the IDGAF point. Those still on the treadmill will be scared to take days and the company wins.

Yea.....Bullshit. Because:

I had a timing belt bearing come apart 25000 miles before the belt is scheduled to be changed. It's a goddamn miracle we didn't fuck something else up internally.

There is no reason for a car to not go 200k or more and never need a head gasket. It's strictly a subaru issue, and it almost always has been. I've done heads on two other cars, one was mine and the other was not. Toyota pickup was mine and some chrysler product that I can't even recall, for a friend. Both had other issues that lead to the head changes, and both were WAY easier to work on.

IIRC the widespread issues were confined to the engines frmo the late 90's / early 00's, no? mine is a '12 and i'm at 75k, the only thing out of the ordinary that needed replaced was some brake pedal sensor that was throwing odd errors.

That's bullshit too and Subaru just hasn't copped to it. The interwebz are still full of late model Subaru head issues. Our was an 05 and another coworker had an 07 that had a head take a shit at 110000-ish.

Holy shit that bearing! :o

I have a Ford. Go ahead make fun of me, it's a 2004 F150 FX5 4 door thing. I love her. I call her big blue. <3

There's a website with a whole section devoted to it:

http://www.licmotorsports.com/blog/2014/01/30/dreaded-subaru-head-gasket-issue

Our Outback is just a hair over 200K miles and it has been... pretty good other than the head gasket, regular oil leaks, and CV joints/half-shafts.

Long as it's not a 6.0 diesel. That may be the only motor in a modern vehicle that's shittier.
The only F@rd I've ever owned was a '00 F350 with 7.3 diesel. I loved that motor, hated the truck. But it was manual windows, vinyl seat, rubber floor, the way a truck should be. Unlike that redneck limo GFF has with the wood trim and leather heated seats.

Haha yeah no wood trim in my truck, big rubber mats, big tires, I do have leather seats tho :headbang:

I have the 5.4L V8, I know it's not the greatest motor in the world, but she's been good to me! Still have all original everything. :D

I had that truck in a Lariat (Ruppie?) trim. The timing belt shit the bed at 140k, repair cost around 5-7k. Got the ultra yuppie Chevy to replace it.
It has seat coolers, dammit!

The window sticker on GFF's rig was something like $78k. He paid a hell of a lot less for it, but it is as loaded as loaded gets. I know last time I saw him it ran 1001hp on the dyno. He finally broke an axle, but it was rolling stock trans and rear end up to that point.

<edit> for those that don't follow GFF's shenanigans, he's redoing a bunch of stuff on his tracked Jeep.

The $1500 Jeep with $8k tracks.

I did the timing belt maintenance at 100k, hopefully it doesn't splode on me. I'll probably get it done again soon to be safe.

I replaced my Subaru's gaskets at 80K, or somewhere near that, they had not totally failed but had begun to leak oil on my clean concrete driveway. Even with that issue it has been the second most trouble free car I have ever owned, its a 2007. The most trouble free car was a 2006 base model Honda Accord - all we did for that car was change the oil when we remembered, sold it with 110K on it - looked and ran like new.

Our 2016 Ram City has already had 3 recall notices...

Mornin!

My manager hardcore fuxored me yesterday. Asked me to prepare a report, which I did, then asked me to attend a meeting he "couldn't make" to "review the report". Straight up asked him if I needed anything else to be prepared for this meeting, he said no. I show up and get blindsided with something that he's been squatting on for the past 8 months that is now on my plate. And to think he had the nerve to afterwards to reply all and ask if I could get it done today...>:(

TLDR = Boss deserves a swift kick in the pickle.
Reply all:
No problem, I'll take care of this.
Help me out though, an initial review doesn't reveal anything particularly difficult.
What's been tying this up for the last 8 months? I must be missing something.

I've done nothing to my truck but regular maintenance. I had another Ford I put 350k on then sold it, it was great little truck to (88' Bronco II 4x4!).

Worst car I've ever had: 2007 Jetta TDi. EVERYTHING broke. Even dropped a turbo. Car fell apart in six years. :banghead:

Its awesome, the thing is a beast. The snow in that area was waist deep in the Jeep sank 4". It was fun to watch him tear around in it. Stock steering was trashed after last year, so he's done a bunch of upgrades.

Not that direct about it but I said I was happy to take care of it. I asked that he give me an opportunity to review what has(n't) been done, split out the tasks involved, estimate how long it was going to take, then discuss whether that time frame is acceptable. I'm not really big on putting in some late hours to satisfy deadlines set with no rational thought put into them.

But that's just me. It also explains why I have this nagging feeling I will never find myself in a management role or other position of authority.
