Does anyone (besides Lightning) make 160mm cranks for a 73mm BB? Preferably aluminum, external BB, and pretty light. Carbon's okay, but Lightning's too expensive. These are for a 10 year old DH racer.
I might be wrong but I think the shortest they make is 165mm, a friend of mine needed 160mm for a mod trials bike and found they were unavailable.
I have always thought about getting longer cranks and just getting the holes drilled and tapped at 155-160mm, then cutting off the excess. Have seen this done for junior riders previously.
Give middleburn an email if 160mm isn't on their site. I used to know the guy there, and having been to their offices a few times I'd be surprised if they don't have 160mms around somewhere even if they never made it to market. Might be willing to post some out for a 10yr old's build No harm in trying!
Thanks guys. Even at 6'2" I'm curious to try 160s. When switching from 170 to 165 I noticed that I could apply power much better over bumps with less wheel hopping and chain skipping. I'm surprised this hasn't been experimented with in DH racing.
160's are listed on their site but they are for square taper BB's. I remember chris canfield had some 160's on his jedi back in 09 i believe. i would email them and ask if thats a route you are interested in.
I'm on 155mm Funn cranks but they are ISIS and aren't that light(never weighed them) but they were dirt cheap and have lasted quite well. The splines seem to fit the FSA BB a lot better than my Middleburns did.
