In Finland fines are given according to one's salary.

I think that makes sense. Problem in the US is all the Have's and the Have Mores don't pay enough taxes this is a great way of doing it.

you are only penalized for being successful if you break the law. its not like it was some secret law that they just dumped on him when he was caught speeding. he knew what would happen.

I've never been 'penalized', and I hope I never will be...

That's pretty funny. :D Personally I don't see a problem w/ fines based on income. It's really just another tax.

y'all are forgetting one very important point...

penalties/fines are supposed to encourage people to follow the law. How does a $200 speeding ticket encourage a millionaire to drive the speed limit?

in ireland, car insurance costs are directly linked to engine displacement, which does make sense to me.
in the US car insurance is directly related to driving record which makes sense to me.

Back to the subject though, I agree that the speeding fine should be directly related to your household income. It's a fine right? not a formality.

**** that! You should not be penalized for success IMO.

how is that a penalty for success????????????

its fair, because that means that a violation of law will have the same value to everyone.

funny thing here in Peru car insurance is not as discriminatory as in the US, where they discrimanate based on age, sex and stuff.

here is a flat fee, only raised when you fvck up.
and btw, its 50 bucks a year for the legal minimum, no matter what car, what year, and who drives it as long as the driver has a clean record!, take that!

i'd like to know what the fascination is defending the rich. Like they could give a flyin f to us poor people who actually have to change our lives to varying degrees to accomodate the expense and consequences of a ticket....

but yah we shouldn't have broke the law then huh.......

I think the current system pretty much treats everyone the same. The state always wins anyway...

We pay helluva lot in taxes as well...which of course makes our relatively highly developed medical and social service system possible in the first place.

Just for the record, that's a small fine compared to the 170,000 euro (approx. $200,000) all-time-record speeding ticket, given to millionare Jussi Salonoja...

It is a direct penalty for success. IMO, $200 is worth $200 whether or not Im a millionaire. Sure, I can pay it off easily, but that is the point of working hard to create wealth, is it not? To give yourself a more comfortable standard of living. Bunch of communists around this place, I swear.
