The pin that goes through the top shock mount can be slightly too long, meaning that even when both the bolts are tight you still get slop. Take the pin out and take a few mm off either end with a dremel/file/bench grinder and she's good to go.
Pinner bolts used throughout the linkages have heads made of butter. Replace 'em with a non-butter subsitute like high-tensile steel if you have a chance.
Get any replacement stuff he may want ASAP before it's all gone for good; links, bearings etc.
as long as the linkage is in good shape and the price is right I'd say go for it. I bought my 06 new right when it came out and still beat on it, the frame is indestructible and rides great. The only downside is the shock linkage, reducers etc- it's easy to wear it out and good luck getting replacements now that IH is kaput.

I have replaced the shock once (this is another friend's bike). The bolts seemed fine about the length and fit, but I will take your word about the low-tensile strength.
I did ride the bike around the neighborhood once, and I was really impressed on how it felt.
IH is gone, search if you want to get the reason why. Rumors are floating around that all their spare parts were purchased, but the purchaser is still unknown.
If I were your friend I would stay away. The 7point5 my friend had (2005 model IIRC) had nothing but linkage troubles. He replaced the links, had a shop do everything they could, and it still had lots of play. The stock Progressive shock was way overdamped for the bike too, but I don't know what the 2006 model had.
I found that my 7point frame had slop in the lower eyelet for the shock. A thin (1/10") strip of electrical tape layed through the hole and through the shock eyelet seems to do the trick. Grease it up, then shove the shock bolt through there. Then tighten it down. I had play in my linkage for 6 months. Then I figured this out, and for the year afterward that I had that 7point frame, it was perfect. No slop at all.
Also, if you can find a way to do it, upgrade the upper links on the 7point if it is a 2005 or 2006 frame. It makes a big difference because those frames usually came with a 9" i2i shock, and the newer links are designed around a 8.75 i2i.

I remember the shock I put on was a 8.75. I took a peek at the 06 catalog and I noticed the 7point7 and 7point3 came with 8.75 and the 7point5 with a 9.0.
I just picked up a new 2008 7point freeride for only 1500 shipped from www.rscycle.com they have some 07 and 08. They bought all remaining IH bikes when IH went under. They say they will warranty any bikes bought from them. I'm pretty sure thats who also bought the extra parts.
As far the bike goes it's the do all bike I've rode.
