Sixth Annual Whiteface 5K Downhill MTB Race partners with the Eastern States Cup

The Whiteface 5K is one of the most prestigious USA Cycling Downhill Races in the nation. For the 2011, the event has teamed up with The Eastern States Cup USAC Regional Championship Series. Together they will present the event on September 10th and 11th. This year’s Whiteface 5k will also be the finals of the USAC New Your State Championships.

The ESC Whiteface 5K features one of the longest, most demanding tracks in the country. Past winners have come from all corners of the USA and from around the world. In the past six years the race has been won by USAC National Champions, UCI World Cup stars and UCI World Champions. The Mountain is conveniently located near Lake Placid, NY; the area features plenty of activities to keep the whole family happy. Most racers spend a few extra days exploring the region and Olympic venues.

In keeping with the ESC philosophy of offering great racing for a great value, the 5K pre-registration fees are $65 for amateurs and $80 for pros, a great savings over prior years. A two-day pass at Whiteface is normally $65 so for amateurs it’s like a free race. Registration includes lift passes for Saturday and Sunday. It will be $15 more on site so please make your plans early. Either way it is a great savings and much less than prior years. The course will still be held from the top of Little Whiteface to the Base Lodge. Racer times will range from 8-15 minutes.

This year Whiteface is not charging for prime pit space near the finish line for teams or tech displays. Whiteface and the ESC are pulling out all the stops to make this a huge event while remaining fun and affordable. The 5k also offers a chinless race for all racers after the ESC event. Fun, fun and more fun is our goal for the weekend.

Please visit www.easternstatescup.com for past results, series standings and the current New York State Championship Standings. Please remember that you have to be at this race to qualify for the NY State Championships. The Nema Team Challenge is getting exciting as teams from all over the east coast are battling it out for the $1000 cash purse. The ESC pro racers are competing for a maximum $1200 cash purse at The Whiteface 5k race.

Whiteface Mountain Bike Park is open 7 days a week from 9:00 till 3:30 until Labor Day Monday September 5th. After Labor Day Whiteface will be open on Friday, Saturday and Sundays only till October 10th for great mountain bike riding. Visit www.downhillmike.com for all things relating to Whiteface Bike Park.

We have the next 4 days X 10 hours = 40 hours X 5 course workers = 200 man hours going into the Whiteface 5 K DH course this week. I think the race course may be kind of great! We are also expecting the fastest 5 K DH course yet!

Note. The course is pretty much set, we just have to make a couple of new sections in order to deem Inconceivable 5 K DH race approved by our standards.

Open on Friday for early training, course inspection and the general public. In order to be on the course on Saturday or Sunday you MUST have your race plate on your bike.

Whiteface 5 K DH Fact: Keeping with tradition, a chainless dh race will be held on the same course immediately following the main dh event. Cost for the chainless dh is just 10 bucks if you are already registered.

On the 1st page of the Active registration you have 4 choices. Pro, category 1, 2 or 3. Most that have pre registered have been registering in the amateur categories, so it should be working fine.

Give me a call or the number for Active if you are still having any trouble. The registration has been pretty busy the last 2 days. Maybe too many were registering at the same time?

You guys are correct! I just got off the phone with Active and it's working now. I even had 4 amateur registrants come in since. Maybe it was you guys?

Thanks for the heads up!

Here is the direct link for the registration: http://www.active.com/cycling/wilmington-ny/whiteface-6th-annual-5-k-downhill-2011

You'll notice the only choice on the 1st page still says "Pro". However, just click on "Register Now Button" and you'll have all of the amateur categories with the correct price to choose from. They tell me it may take a while for the 1st page to refresh.

Anyways, this is the screen you'll get after you click the Register Now Button:

Hey Mike - I know Irene caused some bad flooding up around you, not sure how much rain you have had this past week (we have had a ton) but any road closures etc. you know of that people should keep in mind while making the trek up there?

From the South Exit 31 on I-87 is best. There will be 1 more detour too. You will be driving from Keene to Lake Placid, then to Whiteface. Figure 2 3/4 hours from Albany. That adds 1/2 an hour to the usual drive time.

Coming from the North still take Exit 34 on I-87 to Whiteface Mountain..

just sandbag in cat 2 and buy a day pass...that's what everyone else seems to do. I expect to see the top two cat 2 guys finish in the top 5 for the cat 1 guys. It's happened almost every race so far!
