951 review(stupid long,go pee first)

Well,I gotta admit ,I was a little hesitant to get this bike.Based on other reviews and my own personal experience with Intense quality uncontrol and constant shifting of due dates and deadlines of replacement faulty parts.
-Granted,this is from 10 years ago,but it left a bad taste in my mouth. And from reading "some" posts it still happens at least occasionally.

-Coming off an Orange 224,thus far,was my favorite bike I've owned. Two things,it was poppy and very light. But an extremely fun bike to rideTwo other things,it was unpredictable in the air and I could never figure out how to settle the rear end.

- My criteria was ,had to be a made IN america bike, needed to posses my newfound love for liveliness, and my local bike shop sponsor (Kore Bike)had to be able to get it

-So after gathering info from you guys and getting a great price on it with a CCDB,I chose the 951.I recently had 2 days lift assisted runs on the thing and this bike is unbelievable .I just couldn't wrap my head around how and why this does what it does so well.It feels like it sits in it's initial travel pretty far, which had me a little worried that it was gonna be a plow.I didn't want that.

-Once you work in to that initial travel, the progressive nature of the design takes over.I never had a bike that had that much-I don't know the term-negative travel? It REALLY sticks to the ground exactly and only where I want it to.I did have to get used to this,as the 224 would skip and skitter over small stuff.Once I figured how to push the 951 into corners and it rides really well off the back of the bike I started to rail the SOB.

I've never owned a bike that felt this slow while I'm on it.That's fantastic! This is the first bike Ive had that Its a better bike than I am a rider.I am already faster with alot less effort .

-Just so you know,Im 5 11",185,I got a large with a 500 lb ti spring.
-Now keep in mind a couple things,my gut tells me the CCDB is the ONLY shock to have on this bike.I don't know,I've not tried the others. All I know,is that anybody that knows me,has told me I'm the most picky person when it comes to my bike setup.I only had to adjust this shock twice,on the first day, from initial recommended settings.I could normally mess with my shock 3times a day,on any day.Maybe the stars aligned, and I got lucky.Doubt it though.

-The other thing I did was order 2 degree angle offset reducer cups from Works Components.I've only ridden the 951 with them in.I got used to running the 224 really slack ,so I put these in and kept the rear adjustment in the middle position,as a couple guys said the low setting was too low and induced pedal whacking. So I figured the angle offset was the best solution.I also run it in the 8.5 setting.I do have to be careful where I pedal though.I can't really pedal in the middle of corners. But it really dosent bob at all under power.

-So,sorry for the uber long post, but Ive never been just, in awe of how a bike rides before. It won't be for everyone,it is a couple lbs over what I got used to,but Im over it.

-This is not a plow/hog of a bike.I'm sure the M9 is gonna be a great bike, but you couldn't pay me to even try another bike.So far,as as I am concerned,it's perfect.
-Thanks for the final push,Stik!

Yoouu bastard. It never was a mullet and I resent you implying it was to the uninformed masses.

I spent way too long pecking away a that review and all you got to say is "to hell with that".You are some class act ,my friend. You must be still steamed about that time I beat you on your home turf.I don't know if I ever mentioned THAT before.Just so everyone knows.

Kovarik is and was a badass, but would never dress like him(anymore).I am gonna have to dye my gay porn, village people moustache, though. The reddish hue isn't quite as gay sexy as his.

It feels like it sits in it's initial travel pretty far
Did you ever actually measure your sag? It seems like a lot of the guys I see on these things are riding at least halfway through their travel, even on flat straights. But they'll also say they are absolutely impossible to bottom out.....pretty much what it sounds like you're saying here. Just curious how much of the setup is preference and how much is just the frame design putting you where it wants you.

Well it does feel just like that.I did set the sag at the suggested level.Like I said,I was surprised how lively it still felt, once you got going, with how it sat in the initial travel.I really couldn't feel that point on alot(most?) bikes where you could feel the point of bottom out.I also don't huck to flat either. But it really does inspire confidence ,pushing the bike and feeling like you have something left. All the real setup preference wasn't at the spring,it was in the highspeed /lowspeed benefits of the CCDB.

If the WWW would allow me to find those pics, I'd prove it Mr. Kip Winger with "thin sides".

I drank 2 beers, and I had to pee before I even started reading this....., but I made it through the review and all the responses and I am responding myself, and I still haven't peed.

Good info as I am starting to search for my first real downhill bike and intense is a brand I am diggin'

Thanks for the review Scary - always cool to hear someone stoked on their new ride. Going from a 224 w/ ??? conventional shock to a 951 w/ a CCDB is a massive change in rear suspension!
I hate to admit that I was a little ignorant and snobbish(wonderful combo)about advanced suspension and shock designs over the last few years.I've been outta the loop from 2004 to 2009 and kinda got close minded when it came to stuff like the specialized demo with 9 swing arms and the new turner with 9 pivots.

My previous bikes were Cannondale super v dh,M1 and 2 Foes monos.I don't know what that says or what the combination of ccdb and vpp has to do with the overall ride but I can say that I way underestimated the value of what is rear suspension.I always fiddle with the front end and anything else on the bike, where the rear always seemed like"Eehh...it just follows the front of the bike anyway"The 224 felt very fast, and in rough stuff(where I excel anyway)and great outta corners.Where this feels planted, stable and slow, which means I actually go faster.

So in this case, humble pie tastes really good.

That is because it is basically THE most progressive frame on the market today. Drops from 4:1 to like 1.5:1 through the travel or something ridiculous.

That's awesome you reviewed the bike based on the guys you have 'seen' riding on 'flat straights'.

:D :thumb: oh wait, one more ;)

Nice short review. I love my 951 also. I found I had to run a soft spring to get full travel. I run a 425 on a PUSHed Roco in the 8" setting. I run about 35-40% sag. The bike corners so well and takes big hits like a champ.

great review..im ride a 951 myself too and i like it a lot

make sure you look after the vpp linkage, the screws that hold the top part together and the bearings...i have 1 screw cracked and 5 bearings on my frame went after 10 months...the bottom linkage also comes loose occasionally if its not screwed on tight enough..

and...check your fork's plastic bumpers and make sure they stay in place or it will dent the frame when you crash/shuttle
