I'm late to this thread but what' is the big deal about this frame? Wow a carbon fibre frame with a stiff bb area - it has been done and is being done by numerous companies already isn't it? What am I missing?

we're past that and onto talking about how they can improve the Bejing course.....you know how in that running race they have the barrier with the water on the other side? I think one of those would be good as well.....or, like Heidi said, they could have a challenge like target shooting, or horse shoes

Hey look an aluminum 5" full suspension bike, what's the difference?

I think the thing here is that this new frame is super light, stiff, etc, it was designed to give Adam a "leg up" whether technologically or mentally in the Olympics.
For Giant, it's like when they went from their first generation TCR Carbon frames, to the TCR Advance. Lighter, better ride characteristics, the steady march of progress.

I have an '05 Giant carbon hardtail, the XTC Composite, and I really, really like it. I can only imagine how this one rides.

I'm in favor of having a mix of cross barriers, jumps, telephone poll sections (like Big Bear DH in '00), and some pavement. Lets throw everything in and see who can survive
That just doesn't say "XC Racing" to me. It should be singletrack, double track, fire roads. Not barriers, pavement, etc. A couple of hike-a-bikes, but not CX-style run-ups. But that's my opinion, and I know things change, maybe I'm an old fart.

I remember waaaaay back, mid-90s, the NORBA course in Traverse City (I think) had a water jump in the middle of the course. There was a big stink, a lot of the pros were pissed about it. You could go around the jump, but it was a couple of seconds longer, you could move up a couple of places if you took the jump.

Total derailment:
Anyone remember the super-gnarly "Chute" in the Mammoth XC course in the old days? Just a super, super steep, loose, crazy descent. There was a series of pictures in Mountain Bike magazine of this dude on a Cannondale with no front tire just BOMBING it, and the huge crowd went apesh!t.

Anyway...

I remember that. Most XC racers emerged looking like a powdered donut after cartwheeling through the dust. Comedy for sure.

I was joking when I said they should put in barrier.....on a side note the course doesn't sound much like an XC course, more like a crit. I remember the Powerpost Chute and then the No Fear Chute; it was always good times.

At least people aren't winning on fully rigid bikes, like Miguel Martinez used to do back in the day, the little doper...

He got pinched for doping?? I don't recall hearing that. I remember when he won the world cup at the age of 19, unbelievable. Brings back memories of Sunn's dominance in every discipline

No, he didn't, but he's dirty, maybe never been popped, maybe not EPO, but he's not a clean little angel.

Sorry for the derailment!
Was that gnarly little hill called the No Fear Chute? I'm trying to remember, it was when the race was up at the main resort, before they moved it due to the construction.

Yes it was, good memory...there were three routes with varying degrees of difficulty. I raced the Kamikaze along with the XC that year (my first DH national).....good times. DH sure has changed over the last 11 years

http://www.velonews.com/article/82145/olympic-mtb-course-tougher-than-predicted

Gone are the machine-packed doublewide tracks and included a series of drops, berms, rocks, climbs and descents that should put even the best riders to the test.

“We were complaining last year that it wasn’t hard enough, now it might be too hard!” said Juan Antonio Hermida, silver medalist in Athens 2004. “They’ve put some big stones in the wooded section. It’s up-down, up-down, with no time for recovery. It’s a beautiful course, a hard course. Now we can say it’s a course worth of the Olympic Games.”
Wide, smooth downhill sections have been replaced with a jigsaw of rocks, drops and narrower tracks as crews hauled in huge rocks and boulders to transform what was an easy course into something quite more difficult.

“They’ve made a lot of changes to the course. There are some really technical, steep descents. They added bigger rocks since last year. There are actually too many drops now,” said Bart Brentjens, winner of the first Olympic gold medal in Atlanta 1996 and back for his fourth Olympic Games. “There are drops everywhere. Now it’s more technical, now you need to be a bit more skilled on your bike. I don’t know if it’s necessary. I prefer how it was last year.”
When did he become such a pvssy?

Wonder if Adam is brought along his anthem?
