Question for you all.....

I think a mountain is being made out of a molehill.......(besides my creating this thread).

We were talking about a design solution today, (back and forth over email).

I expressed dislike for one idea and said that I thought it was kinda "ghetto". I didn't think much of it.

I've had like 6 people come to me and comment on my use of this term......like I made it up on my own.

This isn't a well-known colloquialism? Or do I just work with retards? (Hmmm.....no wonder I got this job)

Maybe since Canukistan is such a wonderful land of free health care and happy frenchies...ghetto doesn't get used much as they can't grasp the concept of what a ghetto really is. Your co-workers can't relate.

Don't use the word "ghetto" in a professional environment.

I use it all the time in my private life, but it smacks of racism on several levels.

Besides that it refers to Jews and blacks living in squalor, it also could be misconstrued that you are using a "code word". Most racists are smart enough to avoid the obvious epithets, but they will use "code words" which gets the message across without being blatant.

This does remind me of one thing: a co-worker was discussing why lesbians are so ugly. I decided to just play along, although this 300lb co-worker would be the perfect example why my very athletic sister prefers women.

I chose not to say anything because his stupidity wasn't that offensive and I don't want to offend anyone at my job.

What I am saying is that there are plenty of conflicting social opinions at work, and I try to behave and speak as professionally as possible. In my case, for good reason.

Didn't Elvis sing a song about living in the ghetto?
As the snow flies
On a cold and gray Chicago mornin'
A poor little baby child is born
In the ghetto
And his mama cries
'cause if there's one thing that she don't need
it's another hungry mouth to feed
In the ghetto

People, don't you understand
the child needs a helping hand
or he'll grow to be an angry young man some day
Take a look at you and me,
are we too blind to see,
do we simply turn our heads
and look the other way

Well the world turns
and a hungry little boy with a runny nose
plays in the street as the cold wind blows
In the ghetto

And his hunger burns
so he starts to roam the streets at night
and he learns how to steal
and he learns how to fight
In the ghetto

Then one night in desperation
a young man breaks away
He buys a gun, steals a car,
tries to run, but he don't get far
And his mama cries

As a crowd gathers 'round an angry young man
face down on the street with a gun in his hand
In the ghetto

As her young man dies,
on a cold and gray Chicago mornin',
another little baby child is born
In the ghetto

What a racist. Friggin' Elvis.

This is all assuming MMike is not a complete and utter dummy. We don't all hate him for nothing.

Though I'm not the first king of controversy,

I am the worst thing since Elvis Presley.

To do black music so selfishly,

And use it to get myself wealthy.
Elvis was a hero to most

But he never meant @#$% to me

A straight up racist, that sucker was Simple and plain

Mother^$%* him and John Wayne
