Americans spent $4,155 per family on gasoline in 2011. How much did you spend?

I drove 56,000 miles last year.

20,000 in my truck at 17-18 ish mpg average = $4,433 in diesel (3.99/gallon)
36,000 in my car at about 27 mpg = $4,666 in gas ($3.50/gallon)

sweet. :(

My girlfriend drove another 20-25k in her car.
Looks like you spend almost 20% of your waking hours in a car. I hope for your sake that is part of your job and you are getting paid to do it.

If you primarily used one credit or debit card it's easy to see how much you spent, just go to the card's website and look around for a year-end summary of some sort. We got a Costco AmEx in February, and since they have 3% cash back on gas we stopped using *any* other card for gas. Now at the end of the year we can just log in to our AmEx page and they have a handy summary that tells what you spent for the year on the various categories.

:)
Amex says: $4,191.27

We're above average, baby... above average.

My wife spends about $100 a month. I spend about $150 a month.

$1200 for her plus $750 for me (I didn't have a car until August) puts us at a bit under $2k last year. This year will probably be around $3k since I'll have a car for the entire year.

Around 2500$-3000$

At least half of that of that is from driving to the local dh spot and shuttling. Coincidentally, that's also how I get the most wear on my truck.

Damn. That is close to 10 years of driving for me.

More than half of my driving is to the trialhead.

Then why bother posting?
Boredom at work > your approval of my post criteria

But a rough estimate would be about $6k a year based on my average monthly bill. Couple years ago before I had my commuter car and a 75mile commute in the ~12mpg jeep it was close to $9k/yr....but that was only for 6 months luckily.

Here are my 2010 numbers:

2005 Honda Crv
16,648 Miles
25.14 Average MPG
27.54 Best MPG
21.80 Worst MPG (lots of slogging through deep snow)
661.248 Gallons
$2.783 Avg. Cost/Gal
$1,838.14 Total Cost

I usually let it run down to about 1/4th tank and top off it everytime (average fill up was at 308.3 miles). I then write the odo # on the receipt and enter all the info in an Excel spreadsheet. I even record the station and notes like oil change, tire change, long road trip with bikes on the roof etc. (Oddly enough some of my worst mileage number are with Hess gas). I'm way behind entering the data for 2011.
Here are my 2011 numbers:

2005 Honda CRV
22,108 Miles
295mi Avg/Fill-up
24.38 Avg MPG
28.36 Best MPG
21.29 Worst MPG
$3.614 Avg/$/Gal
908.44 Gallons
$3,286.22 Total Cost

Ouch! 250 more gallons + 83 cents more per gallon = $1448! Maybe the lower MPG is due to the fact that my tires were worn out. Or maybe I'm just getting a lead foot. I still set my cruise to the speed limit on the highway but I might be accelerating faster.

For S&G here are my number for other years:

2009
2005 Honda CRV
20,567 Miles
855.41 Gallons
24.04 Avg MPG
293.8 Avg/Fill-up
$2.335 Avg/$/Gallon
$1,993.88 Total Cost

2008
2005 Honda CRV
25,723 Miles
299.1 Avg/Fill-up
25.58 Avg MPG
$3.292 Avg/$/Gallon
1,005.81 Gallons
$3,296.50 Total Cost

2007
2005 Honda CRV
23,241 Miles
294.2 Avg/Fillup
26.29 Avg MPG
$2.711 Avg/$/Gallon
885.40 Gallons
$2,389.12 Total Cost

The breakdown of my driving goes about like this.

26,000 Miles - Commuting to and from work, 49 miles one way, typically about 120 a day after taking my son to school/daycare/hitting the gym/skihill/trailhead after work
.
2,500 - Customer visits for work, typically 15-40 mile round trip from the office a few times a week. Mileage/expenses paid.

7,500 miles - Car miles, out to dinner, visits to friends, family, wrestling tournaments for my son, misc driving, any kind of road trip that will fit in my car and doesn't require my truck.

20,000 miles - Truck, driving to the trail head to ride my bike (locally that can be 10-75 miles round trip) bmx track (90 miles round trip), 5 "long" road trips (700 miles or more round trip), and multiple "short" road trips within the state of michigan for riding.

I figure this year if work continues to go well my mileage numbers will increase because I am hoping to hit up more east coast bike parks.

before even reading your article I can tell you my own depressing numbers about my commute.

1. Cars, I buy and sell them so often it makes my head spin, partially to avoid maintenance costs, partially out of boredom, and partially to try and not lose my ass on them, it's worked pretty well so far.
2. Tires, I need tires almost once every 12-16 months, sometimes longer if it's summer when I notice they are super low.
3. struts, tie rods, ball joints, brakes, wear items, I go through a **** ton.
4. Oil changes.
5. time, I spend 2 hours a day commuting. On the plus side, except for one person in my office out of 7 of us, my commute is only 10 minutes longer than everyone elses (because I am not sitting at lights on side streets I am on the freeway) and I don't have to live in metro Detroit, I live almost 60-70 miles from Detroit in a small town. Small positive to the other trade offs I make.

Overall I'd probably give up close to 15k a year to cut my commute in half. I don't plan on moving, unless it is out of state, I like where I live in comparison to other local options.

I spend $3,120 a year just driving to work. My family fuel cost must be over $6k!

I'm getting rid of my truck for a 40mpg car.
