No need to be concerned. I've been running the pay version of AVG for almost 4 years now, just supporting good software.

Just upgraded to AVG 8.0, saw no performance hit at all. I've used AVG free and full versions extensively, the only difference between the two is faster downloads for updates (you get a priority server and it's roughly 50% faster in my experience) and you get all the side-utilities with the pay version (anti-spyware, anti-phishing, a few things like that). All the side utilities can be shut off individually if you don't like them or feel you are taking a performance hit.

I wouldn't really notice much of a performance hit since I've got a 3.6ghz x2 machine w/ 4gb of RAM now, but my extensive experience with both pay and free versions of AVG, though, is the pay versions are exactly as fast as the free versions.

Also, there is no practical limit to licensing. I've installed AVG at least a dozen times with the same license key on 4 machines (2 stolen ones, 2 replacement ones) and have never hit a snag.

Incidentally, I checked my home machine and all of the AVG daemons (I have everything turned on: anti-virus, anti-spyware, link scanner, web shield) are currently consuming a total of 25mb of memory.

Do you really need that much porn?

(sorry for the derail, I couldn't help myself here)

He still uses a 28.8 modem. He downloads one pic at a time on each desktop.

Next morning, he looks at them.

In the past, they discontinued the free older version but you simply needed to get the newer free version... is this not the case this year?
Yeah this is true. That would be my guess. If I had to pay for AV/Antimalware, nod32 would get my nod :D

Shut up and ride...
May be worth buying the AVG........It's worked well thus far, and it's what I run on the 64 Bit Vista....Runs quite nicely.....

Maybe it's time to bite the bullet and purchase the AVG.....

Its a minimal benefit to buy security suites vs. the free AV alternatives unless you are looking for better malware protection (not just AV).
