Dave, thanks for letting me know about this forum!!! Kinda new to this, but I'm happy to contribute.Matt D said:Thanks dw, an aftermarket swingarm is easy enough to make, but what about those disks at the dropouts and the crack pipes that come out of the seatstays? If you could ask him to clarify those it would be awesome.
This is an aftermarket 4130 cro-moly swing arm for the Santa Cruz Bullit. This project started as more of a dare than anything else, and I brought it to the show so the world could see what Tonic Fab is capable of. Although we are a new company, we are definately not amatuers. Although we do function out of a garage, I hoped the swing arm would communicate that we are not the average garage operation.
That said, I only take exception to Matt D who claims this thing is "easy enough to make.." It is actually a very high tolerance part which requires a great deal of experience to pull off. Some folks will get this, others won't. Oh well....
The B.A.D.Mofo is steel. It does have more tire clearance, although that's not a problem on the Bullit. Big 24's do fit better, however.
The bent seat stays..just thought they looked good.
Shock spacing is at 22, not 42, so no more bent bolts.
The aluminum, cylindrical inserts are pressed into the swing arm receivers. In a pinch these could be pushed out. These receivers have two M6 helicoils installed at 90 degress.
The drop outs are bolted to the swing arm to these inserts. The effect is a durable, replaceable and re-configurable drop out system.
For the show I set the bike up with a 9.5x3 shock, which results in 8" of travel for the Bullit. The drop outs in the show bike compensate for the geometry change using the big shock. The DO's in the photo are 20mm lower and 13mm longer than the stock position. So, the bike stays pretty raked out and the tire doesn't hit anything when bottomed. Tonic Fab market research indicated this was sorta important....
Of course stock postion DO's and and thru axle versions will be available....
As for the pipe....optional equipment, and completely up to you how you want to use it.
Response for the swing arm had been overwhelming!!! I'll try and have pricing and availability over the next couple weeks.
Cheers,
L
