Back after 8 years, I need a 8 speed Crankset, what's a budget friendly one?

I just got a used bike after being out of the game for about 8 years, I am upgrading the handlebars, the stem and the front D as we speak, but now I need a new Crankset.
The tech at my local shop is telling me that the Deore and the Deore LX are nice options under $100.00 but that they are only 9 speed compatible these days??? Is this 100% correct, if so, does anyone know a good under $100 Crankset with Bottom Bracket that you could recommend, or a place to get a Deore LX 8 speed?
By the way, its a 1999 Gary Fisher Tassajara actually in MINT condition that I got for way cheap. Hardtail obviously. Currently had a piece of crap Acera Crank on it. Everything else on the bike is pretty solid. Let me know, Jason

cranks yes, chainrings no. Well, you could get away with it, but there might be a minor amount of slop since 9spd teeth are ever so slightly more narrow than 8spd. For the chainrings though it shouldn't really be an issue.
