Can anyone tell me where I can get a day pass for Brown Mountain besides the Grandfather Ranger District in Nebo? I've been told that there are some stores that sell them too. Do they have a honor box set up in the parking lot?

Almost all the major stores in morganton have them at the counter, my personal favorite is when your getting ready to turn on to the dirt road/ohv area from morganton keep going straight past the entrance about 3 miles or so and you will come to a village with a little store that sells the day and season passes, not so much traffic and people.

Kayak shop beside burgerking on the main drag across from big Kmart in morganton right before you head out into the forest also has them.

Speaking of passes, I just ran across an announcement that Pisgah and Nantahala NFs are pursuing increased fees for certain rec areas, Brown Mtn included. They are trying to raise the fees for Brown Mtn from $5 to $7 for next year, and then up to $10 by 2013.

Assuming it all goes to trail maintenance, I got no problem with a couple extra dollars per trip.
