Buying watches online

I'm not talking timex, but more expensive watches (ebel, Raymond Weil). The prices are much better due to less overhead I would assume. Has anyone ever bought a high end watch online? If so what shop did you use and how did you make sure it was reputable?

I have never understood the concept of a high end watch. My friend has a $4k watch (Bulova, I think) he bought when he first started making "stupid" money. It's nice, but had he not told me what he paid, I would never have looked at it and said "wow, nice $4k watch!"

It's jewelry. I can understand it. That said, I won't spend more than $50 or so on my watches. I do have a couple of hundred dollar ones I got as gifts. And I don't go anywhere without a watch on.

I won't be spending 4 grand either. It's a gift for my wife as she is turning 40 and it will be our 10 year anniversary.

My parents got me a Citizen eco-drive Skyhawk AT watch as a grad gift which was a complete surprise (told them I didn't need/want anything), but goddamn do I love me a nice watch. Granted its not a CRAZY money watch, but its more than I would ever spend for a watch myself. What's cool is it's powered by a solar cell behind the faceplate, which is why they got it (I work for a solar company).

Sorry for the unhelpful side story. :(

a nice watch is definitely a status thing. most of the time it is a fairly subtle detail so you aren't flaunting what you have, but it's there for everyone to see. having a rolex or any other kind of nice watch shows that you have some money and thus, are successful. it's much like wearing a very nice suit as opposed to something you pick up at k-mart, people will notice it and i think in the business world it will give you more of a "professional" look.

Tag! I've had mine for 5 months now and love it. Granted I'd never personally pay for this watch, but it was a grad present from my parents/grandparents.

That's why I bought a Rolex in Singapore for $150. It was damn nice, too. Seiko reliability with the looks of a Roli!

A nice suit fits better AND looks better, but I can't fell a monetary difference on my wrist. I know it's a fashion thing (that also escapes me). Good running shoes preform better, a good bike rides better, so does a good watch track time better?

Sorry for the hijack. It's a social fascination I have.

Actually..........yes. High end watches tend to have more precise internals that keep time better. Time tolerances are actually a spec found with most high-end watches (ie: accurate to within +/- 1 s/month).

My watch actually has the ability to sync to the UTC time through radio control as long as it has a signal (even has a signal strength reading on the dial). Wherever I am, I hit the button, it will detect the signal, and I can automatically adjust the time to sync with the appropriate UTC time at whichever time zone I am in. Very useful for anyone who travels (which I may do for work in the future).

Wouldn't even a $40 digital watch be more precise than a high end mechanical one?

Mine is both digital and mechanical. I'm assuming all the actual controls are digital, but having the clock hands allows it to tell time while using the digital displays to show the date, day, timer, timezone, etc. So to answer your question...........probably:rofl:

I've grabbed a few Tags off the web from various e-tailers I found through google. Just make sure it is a US shop and call and speak with them. Try and make sure they are an authorized retail of the brand you want and make sure you can return it if it isn't what you wanted/expected and so on. Hade good luck with all of them. FWIW Tags are awsome but maybe won't have the same "wow" effect with the Mrs as a seiko, rolex, movado...

I have found that people who spend huge amounts of money on certain things typically have inner issues they need to work out. I'm pretty sure my $60 watch tells time just as accurate as a $4000 watch...D

Likewise I'm sure someone's $200 Huffy handles trails as well as your $5000 mountain bike (a bit of a stretch, but you get the idea.)

And there is where my social fascination exists.

I love fast cars/bikes/motos, but the only piece of jewelry I ever wear is my $100 Ti wedding band.

I gave Tim a hard time about his watch when he had it on one night. I would look at my phone, then ask him what time it was, just to make sure my phone was staying current.

It was right after an article that was published last year about declining watch sales due to the use of cell phones.

Mine is engraved. I got my wife a matching one off ebay for $35. :D

She has become anti-diamond after watching a show on mining and the environmental damage caused in the pursuit of a shinny rock. She still likes CZ's, though.

I just got a new Panerai 177, but I bought it through a friend who has a watch hobby. There are some good websites where people sell watches, he got it new for me, I spent waaay more than I ever thought I would on a watch, but damn do I love it. It's titanium, so it's lighter than my old steel watch. :)
I had a Panerai 112, but a deal came through on the 177, and I ended up getting about $500 more for the 112 than I paid.
Check out www.timezone.com, they have forums and classifieds, that's where my friend usually does his business.

A seiko has a wow effect? You obviously don't know watches. A Tag is way nicer than a Seiko, and most Movados.

Exactly, no need to s**t on someone for something they like and enjoy. Some people collect stamps, others cars, some people like watches.
If I can afford it, I don't see why anyone else should care what I spent on it. I did it for me, it was a nice 30th birthday present to myself. My dad did something very similar with a Rolex when he was in his early 30s.
I still spend a lot more on bikes though, I have my priorities...

See, and people think I'm crazy because I tip strippers for every song. They work for tips, and I appreciate the effort.
Stuff like that pays off in spades though.
And I'm sure strippers can recognize a spendy watch, and focus their efforts* accordingly.
