I know (or at least *think* I know) that it's possible to upgrade 9spd Record shifters with 10spd internals.
Is it also possible to do the same with the 8spd ones?

Many thanks!

Actually, thinking about it, it's probably not worth the effort, then I'd need new derailleurs, etc...boo.

And what bike is it?

"Falling into your hands" sounds illegal btw ;)
Giant TCR Once, the alloy version. I had one years back, never really rode it, as I left Giant soon after I got it.

Ex-coworker is giving it to me in a bit of a trade thing.
I can never turn down another bike...

Yeah, you can...there's a website out there detailing the procedure and all the parts, but the name escapes me.

How many bikes do you have? Just curious, since just about every other week you mention getting a new one.
Honestly the answer is too many.
Right now I have six "good" road bikes, three of which have Dura Ace 7800, one has Dura Ace 7900, one has Red, and one has Record 10. Four of which are Felts, and this TCR would make seven total.

I also have my "ride with the GF" rigid steel MTB that's a hodge-podge of worn-out and old stuff from my previous good mountain bikes. A Felt Troy Lee beach cruiser

I have a couple of others that are going away, like the old "rain" bike, and probably 4 or 5 MTB frames that I'm going to sell off.

Then I have projects that are "in process," like the Felt Breed SSCX frame I'm building up, a fixie project, putting the S-Works CX flat bar bike back together, and a couple of others that escape me now.

So all in all, way too many. It's partially a bike OCD thing, the collecting/hoarding, and I'm trying to scale it back a bit, and working where I do can make that hard at times. But waaah waaah listen to me.
I just love bikes, having them, riding them, talking about them. RM is fun for that, there are other complete bike nerds that love it too, so when I can't find a good conversation in the office to sate my need, RM is a good outlet.
Next year I'll roll over probably 3 or 4 of the road bikes to the 2011 stuff, latest and greatest, gotta keep up.

It might be more hassle than it's worth, with cogs, chainrings, derailleurs, etc, I'll probably just keep it the way it is. It'll remind me of the good old days...

ShimaNO has a much simpler upgrade path than Campy: throw out old parts, replace with new.

Keep up the praises for DA7800 that makes me feel even better about my bike.

Have you seen the Trek Madone bike builder they still offer DA7800?

Always like the look of the Once TCR with the mtb style sloping top tube.

Dude, 7800 is the sh!t!
I'm just afraid that I'm not going to like 7900 as much. Which would mean Di2 would be the next step. Hey, maybe now I'm *hoping* I don't...

That frame was light too, like 1,000g in a M. And that was years ago.

I agree on the 7800. I have it on my Aerocat and the sh*t just works, period. I have Red on the Cannondale and it works just as well but it doesn't seem as "set it and forget it" like 7800. Maybe it's just my experience, who knows.

For me, I just love the shape/feel of the Shimano hoods. I'm just not as comfy on the SRAM stuff.

I guess that came off as a bit coarse, but I'm not condemning you or anything. As soon as I get a few paychecks out of grad school I'll definitely expand/upgrade my stable, though probably not to your extent. I figure 2 mtbs, 2 roadies, and a commuter would be about right. I definitely understand the tinkering/collecting bug, I'm studing acoustical engineering for pete's sake.

There really no such thing as to many bikes is there ? Let's see I have 2 Team Issue Fuji's. One is built with Dura Ace and one with Ultegra SL. I have a Cannondale System Six built with Sram Red. Have an Aerocat R505 built with Dura Ace. Have a steel fixie and a new Aerocat carbon mtb on the way.
I think the bikes are the only reason I race :)

Oh, I didn't take it that way, don't worry. I happen to work in the bicycle industry, and have for many years, so having lots and lots of bikes is par for the course and totally expected. I think I calculated it once, and in the almost 5 years I worked for Giant, I had something like 48 different bikes, mostly different MTBs. I'm more into the road thing now, hence the collection of roadies.
I always thought I'd be happy with a hardtail, a dually, and a road bike, but my goals change. I have bikes for different days, I have a rain bike for when it's crappy out and I don't want to dirty up a carbon bike.
Tinkering is fun, and since it's my career, so much the better. Fun bike stuff falls into my lap, as folks here on RM can attest.

The perfect number of bikes is n+1, where n is the number of bikes you currently own.
I've become a Dura Ace snob of late, even my rain bike for this year is going to be 7800-equipped. Nothing below Dura Ace this year, the Ultegra bike is going away.
I do like my Red bike, but I just like DA better. Not a whole ton better, but enough.

I know. I read a lot more than I post. I would have bought a lot of stuff off of you If I had the coin.
There will always be stuff...I don't see myself stopping anytime soon.

Don't let James fool you. He is really in the mafia and the bikes are just a money laundering scheme
Ha! I always call my garage my investment bank.

Update: looks like the whole bike turned into a frameset. Sigh. If it's the 1" version I'm gonna pass. If it's 1 1/8" then probably.
Dammit, now I need another build kit. Maybe I'll slum with some Force stuff...

I really like Sram. I've been riding Di2 this week and don't love the feel. Perhaps it's fit, as I've not done mine yet, but we'll know by tomorrow night if that's it. Di2 does shift in a cool way and the SL3 is pretty nice as well.
