my dad bought a tr6 which I helped restore from boxes and only put like 7 grand into it from the ground up. He doesn't drive it every day but does drive it regularly and he hasn't mentioned any reliability issues. It comes complete with Lucas: Prince of Darkness wiring and smith gauges. Maybe you could find a resto that somebody else finished....but you're probably only going to find originals for that price.

Jap cars are more reliable and easier to maintain, in general, but many lack the character of other cars. How about a -ZX car? 300ZXs came with turbos in the mid eighties and are overlooked as performance sports cars.

Don't mess with corvairs unless you have a mechanic's touch (same with british cars). They're rear engined and air cooled, and I think Nader wrote his book "Unsafe at any speed" on them. He's a tool though, so take it for what it's worth. I love old audis, so if you're masochistic enough you can drive whatever you want to...

Yeah I've looked at this kind of thing as well, and honestly I've thought of all the cars mentioned here. 25 year old BMW is gonna' need to have some money put in to it, but it's probobly number 3 on my list if I can find the right car.

z3? Sure, if I had another 5K sitting around.

The problem with the Supra is I'm just not a big fan of the 80's body stye.

To answer the question an MR2 is in the budget, but not the model shown. I can afford a mid/early 90's version.

Another car I've looked at is a 3000GT, preferably with a turbo. Kind of a pig like the 300ZX but fun to drive I'm sure.

The one big mess though is that none of the above listed cars have the same reliablility or low price of a decent Miata.

I like that body style, but I would avoid the ES version. It was tuned for fuel economy, not performance.

It sounds like a Miata is probably the car for you. For the price you just can't beat it for performance, reliability and fun factor.

Or there is the Jeep that somebody mentioned. My dad decided to get a Wrangler instead of a Miata or Z3, and I have to admit it's a whole lot of fun to drive around with the top down. Not in quite the same way as a Miata, but still a hell of a lot of fun.

Good call on the jeep. I could fit my bike in it too. Hmmm....

i'd love to find out where people are getting z3s for under 10g, or anywhere near 3-4k. Is that a west coast thing? They don't exist for less than 14 around here.

I just saw a few that were right around $10k on autotrader a few minutes ago.

How about a Z3? A bit better looking and nicer inside than a Miata, and the last time I was looking at cars you could find them pretty reasonably priced. And since they're convertibles they seem to spend most of their lives in garages and have pretty low miles.
also expensive to repair, has an inferior suspension design, less aftermarket support, and no real motorsports options (as opposed to spec miata, etc.).

5 Gs (well invested) could put your child through college when the time comes. :)

My dad had a 1974 MG roadster that he bought in 1979 - it had twin SU downdrafts that could NEVER be calibrated. You basically sat on the ground with your legs angled out but still shoved in behind the wheel wells. The engine heat was incredible - even though it was a father / son project car we both grew to hate it. We'd go fishing up in the Colorado mountains but always had to cut out early in case we had to bleed the float chambers, or whatever they where. Total POS.

In that case - go for a Datsun 510, bad ass, no frills and reliable as hell. Easy to modify.
Finding one in good condition is difficult and I don't have the time or knowledge to fix one up. Some day I hope to be able to do that kind of thing, but not now.

To be honest after a suggestion above I am really leaning towards a Wrangler now. The front runner right now.

Some guy in highschool had one years ago. I remember another kid walked up and just ripped the spoiler right off. Good stuff.
No, no, no, the Fiero was driving by, and Alex tried to grab on to skitch, and the spoiler just pulled off. That was f***ing funny. I thought the driver was gonna cry...

Oh yeah, I was standing right next to Alex. Then I ran off and hid because I was laughing so damned hard. God, I can't remember the driver's name, but I can see his face.

lol..I was trying not to say anything...blue would be the last perosn I would take car advice from :D...D
Do you see me advocating any VWs/Audis? ;)

Though a Mk2 GTI with a 1.8T or VR6 would be a whole ton of fun. Still FWD and very nose heavy, though. Wouldn't do as well as a BMW or Miata as a "fun" car. Or be as reliable...

I'd take a GTI VR6 over a Miata any day, but I need to work within my price range and the models I really like are out of it. Man those things pull!

A Mk3 GTI VR6 is definitely in your price range. You might be able to find a Mk2 GTI with a VR6 swap in the VWVortex classifieds in your range, too. I'd take a Mk2 over a Mk3 with a VR any day of the week.

I have a VR in my Mk3 Jetta with lots of engine work and it's a torque monster...

That's a nice looking GTI, buuut...

What exactly do you want from the car? Do you plan on doing any engine modifications? Reliability (I guess that's a stupid question, as you were inquiring about an MG ;))? Any plans to track the car?

The VR6 is a cool-as-fvck motor, don't get me wrong, but it's tough to squeeze major HP over stock (above 200WHP) out of a 12v VR without a ton of engine work or a Turbo/Super setup (which always=lots of money, unless you're resourceful and can piece together a junkyard turbo setup). Hell, I've got an $8000 VR6 motor in my car and it's still just barely pushing 200WHP. If you're looking for a motor to bolt $500 worth of crap to and fly to the moon, the VR is not it. If you're looking for a solid daily driver engine that's fairly quick and has a buttload of torque, the VR is your choice.

Word of caution: If the VR6 hasn't been well maintained (regular oil changes, G11/G12 red coolant all its life, chains have been done between 100-120k miles), expect to take it in the ass for repairs.

If you're interested in a MkIII, you might be able to score a deal on a VRT in the Vortex classifieds in your pricerange (vwvortex.com).

If you do buy a MkIII, be sure to budget in about a grand for coilovers and a strut bar. The stock suspension setup blows on these cars.

My vote: Find either an e30 BMW 325 for cheap and dump a grundle of cash into it, or an e36 323/328 in good condition in your budget.

Alfa Romeo, amazing that they haven't been mentioned yet.. They're all fun to drive and handle better than most other cars.

The late 80´s/ early 90's Alfa 75 America 3,0 with 185hp. Really fun cars that have already started to rise in price in Sweden!

Mid 80's Alfa GTV6 "Turbo Killer" or the GTV 2,0. Massive road presence, brutal like few!

Early/mid 70's Alfa GTV 2,0 (preferably) "Bertone Cupé". Those cars do 8's around Miatas... Easily 180-200hp tune ups and way less than 1000kg. True modern classics!

One for the girls: Alfa Spider. Get a really early or really late model, they look best.

Other brands:

BMW E30 325, 175hp and really peaky torque. Soo much fun and you can get a station wagon between -88 and -90! Lighter than the E36's.

BMW E21 323, are lighter, cooler and look way better than E30's in my opinion.

BMW M635's from the mid 80's. They have that hungry shark look..

Late 80's Alpina B6 3,5 with 256hp.

Saab 900 Aero, 175hp easily tunable 2litre turbo's. Last model year was -91. Get one with the big rear competition spoiler as it does a great deal for the look, and also the 16" Aero wheels from the 9000 model. Graphite gray, black or deep red are all good colours. Semi station wagon and reliable as few!

Datsun 240Z.

VW Rabbit GTI type 1, the best looking dub ever. 910kg and 112hp.

As you said, the -92 and later RX7's are the dogs bollocs..

Sorry Rockwool...most of the cars you mentioned either:

A) Are so ridiculously rare here it's damn near impossible to find one

or

B) Were never sold in the US

We get shafted when it comes to the cool Euromobiles :(

**** man, the US is a big mf country and you've always been the richest. That has led to that you have a lot of cool imports that very often are fully doughed in with all the extras.. At least when it comes to old Mercedes' that I've looked for alot on ebay.

But hey, that's how it is, we hardly get any of your US produced cars over here, specially not the Japanese cars comming out of US plants. Over here they've started to brand all mopar as Dodge's so that people won't get confused by all different brands, or something stupid like that, comming from Chrysler. Have you ever seen a Dodge 300?!!

Another car that is pretty cool, but far from being a small sportscar, is the 80's Citroen CX 25 Turbo 2. The last car that Citroen built after their old philosophy. Cars of today just don't have any personality, companies are afraid to stick their chin out as they might loose out on boring mr middle-lane that is by far the biggest consuming group. :(

Skylines are wicked! We don't have them over here eather. UK is full of them, dunno about Germany. Still, they don't come close to the grace of the mid/late 90's RX7's. Those wankels make these cars have this unusual thing called personality. Their low weight isn't a bad thing either..
