with 2005 models on the websites and showing up in shops I may have found my next bike the Giant NRS composite-2.

but Ive been hearing from mostly DH and trials riding friends (who freak out at the thought of anything carbon on a bike) that one scratch will doom the frame to cracking

im not so worried that its a dual suspention as carbon has a longer fatiuge life than aluminum.

Im not at all mean to my bikes, but i just dont one crash or some one handling it rough to write off such an expencive frame

carbon fiber componets =okay

carbon fiber frame= :nope: :nope: :nope: :nope: :nope: :nope: :nope:

stick to alluminum you might not be hard on bikes but the trails are. theres a reason dh bikes weigh what they do. i know xc riders are all about the sub 20 lb bikes but i would rather lug a 25-30 lb bike up a hill that i knew was gonna last than a 10lb carbon fiber bike that will brake after a few hard crashes. just my opinion

Carbon can take a beating. DH'ers dont like it because when it breaks it's breaks immediately and thoroughly, like titanium. Whereas aluminum will stress/crack/bend/break usually in a slower process. i've owned a few carbon bikes(GT sts's) and i did break one frame, but the second one was pretty bombproof.
Giant is good with warranties, if you use it for XC you should be fine. The feel of carbon is pretty unique.

What is that, a Straight Six that got attacked by a carbon rapist?
BCD, foo. It don't even look like no Straight Six, do you see a pull shock, XC boi? I don't either. To me it looks like a pimp ass Carbon DH frame for one fast gangsta. G-unit out.

I think carbon is very strong and will survive most normal crashes where it is not clammed against something like a tree or a rock......if it is it might not hold up ! If you worry get something else, - if you just love carbon then do not think so much about it and get one. Everything can break anyway!

A Straight six has a standard shock driven by a modified 4 bar...the "seatstay" of the swingarm is made of carbon fiber and has a very similar position and angle, but besides that they are comepletely different

They made Straight Sixes with a pull shock, too, so you're both right.

There are lots of carbon fiber frames that hold up fine. The material itself is great, very strong. Don't believe the paranoia.

If you're mostly nice to your frames, I'm sure a CF frame will hold up just fine.

(mostly nice = xc, light trail riding)

no carbon for them dh frames, except of course the pimpy BCD. I've yet to decide whether I love or hate the looks of that frame...

:stupid: I rode a CF frame for 7 years. Scratched the hell out of it. Crashed a few times on rock. Didn't break catastrophically until I drove it into the garage on my bike rack.

I'd still be riding that ol' P.O.S. if I hadn't whacked it.

Livin it up in the O.C.
The one thing you really have to worry about with a CF bike is when you are shuttling it and it is rubbing against your buddy's pedals for a while.
I know someone who did this and it wore right through the frame.

thanks for taking the heat man.

this one time though...well ok a bunch of times...i pissed on this kids door handle to his truck because he was a jerk to me. Then i found out like three other guys that this kid had pissed off (no pun intended) were pissing on his car too. so everyday after school at least one kid had pissed on this true asshats truck.
good stuff.

It's never good to transport a bike rubbing though. Carbon or not.

By all means! Buy some CF and send it to me. I'll shove it myself.

Woohoo! Free CF!

I'm not afraid............... :D

-S.S.-
have you ever received a carbon sliver?
they hurt intense like because they have barbs like a fish hook.
not fun at all.
so if you want those up your rear by all means shove away! :dead:
