i've got a bike with a 31.6 seat tube.
i've got a thomson post in 30.9.
can i use coke/PBR can as a seat post shim?

i am seriously curious.

use whatever fits really, once your not too fond of the seatpost and dont mind scratching it a bit! once the frame doesnt have to be 'bent' or overtightened to fit the post u should be fine

that is so ghetto, but i guess i see no reason why it wouldn't. its on my dh bike, the seat never really moves up or down. i don't see the point trying to sit down and pedal a bike like that...

There are companies that make shims for seat tubes, not sure if 31.6 -> 30.9 is available/would work though.

Gravity Dropper sold me a shim for your needs. It's thin, but has a lip on the tip so you don't lose it in your bike...

I use a stop n shop brand sprite can. I am thinking about switching to something classy like a Dr. Pepper.

Any Malt liquor can works best. Be sure to drink the contents first. You may need to do this several times before finding one that fits well
