So, the BB on my fixed-gear townie is totally shot, due to it being the original part from a 30+ year old Browning, but I'd really like to tighten it up or replace it. The problem is that I have no idea how to remove the old-school cottered cranks. Any suggestions?

Take it to your local shop, they should have a tool to remove the cotterpin. If not, just remove the nut and pound it out with a hammer....this may, or may not, be very succesfull, depending how long the cotter pin has been in.
