If you decide to go outside your area, Mike Garcia (oddsandendos.com) is very good and very reasonably priced. I recommend getting his contact info at the website and calling him as he can give you a lot more info about your options over the phone. Dave Thomas of Speed Dream is a very renouned wheel builder. He's a bit pricier than Mike, though. I've got one wheel by each of them and they've both held up very well for over a year so far.ragerider said:

I put 1100 miles on the set I got for my XC bike last year and when I had them checked at the end of the season they were still as perfectly true as the day I got them. I just picked up this new set from Dave for my new FR rig for this season.
His wheelsets are a little pricey (these were $700 without the rubber) but he uses Chris King hubs, and will work with you on your weight / riding style match the perfect rim to it.
