I'm currently in the market for a rear disc now that I have acquired a TT bike. I've been looking at two wheels (mainly due to cost): the Reynolds Element and American Classic's new disc. The AC is $125 cheaper, but it is a new product. Is it just a rebadged, non-dimpled Zipp like Williams sells or does AC actually make it?

:stupid:

You can pick up some used discs on the cheap(ish)
Agreed, or also look at Renn for an affordable disc wheel. They make pretty nice stuff, especially considering the price.

What about a wheel cover? Those can be 90% as fast as a disc for 10% of the cost, the tri-geek folks over at SlowTwitch.com swear by them.

If you really need to save money you could buy a card board box and make your own :D

When I was in college at UCSB, we had an annual "Coaster Brake Classic" race, beach cruisers only, 3 events: TT, Team Cruiser 'Cross, and a Crit.
One of the guys from the road race team made cardboard discs, F&R for the TT, and showed up in a full skinsuit. It was rad...

I'm trying to spend less than $1000

The Renn discs look nice, but are there any shortcomings with them? Their weight is down there with the Reynolds, but light/strong/cheap/pick/two?

And where are these cheap used ones to be found? Looking at completed listings on eBay, they aren't much cheaper used than I can get new.

James, thanks for the cover suggestion, but I'll probably just spring for the dedicated disc wheel.

Do a search on SlowTwitch for the Renn stuff, I think that you'll find a lot of talk about them, they seem pretty damn nice.
Check ST's classifieds too, always some tri-geek on there who bit off more than he could chew, and is offing his stuff.

No worries on the cover, just a suggestion, but I suppose you should have 18 different water bottle cages on your bike to run that. If it were me I'd be rocking the full-on disc too, I hate to compromise on any of my bikes, even the ones that get ridden the least...

Don't you worry, I'll have a bento box, a sleeveless jersey, and arm warmers. :D

I browsed the ST classifieds and didn't see much, though I'll look a bit further. As far as the American Classic disc goes....

Looks like a Zipp, no?

Looks like a good deal. How much time do the dimples save?
They claim negative air drag....it's a fair amount of time over a 40k TT. I will say this though...I have a friend who had one and didn't like it. He said its light but most of the weight is at the hub and wheel has an odd feel because of this....he prefers the HED wheels. I haven't ridden any discs so I can't comment.
