Apparently frustrated by the circulation of photos on the Internet, Ducati decided to issue a press release this evening disclosing the stunning 1098 superbike originally scheduled for debut at the Milan show next week. Below is the full text of that press release. To us, the most incredible statistic is the claimed weight of the new v-twin superbike . . . a mere 381 pounds! According to Ducati, the 1098 is lighter than any production Japanese 1000. If true, this would be amazing for a v-twin of this displacement.

As we predicted recently, the styling of the 1098 draws heavily on the original 916 (one of the most beautiful bikes ever made).

Cupertino, CA (November 8, 2006) - Ducati North America announces the international launch and North American pricing for the new 1098 Superbike.

This incredible new machine produces 160hp and 90.4lbs/ft of torque, which results in making the 1098 the most powerful twin-cylinder motorcycle in the world, with the highest torque-to-weight ratio of any sport bike. In addition, the 1098 is also the lightest open class Superbike available, weighing 381 pounds.

The priority in every step of the 1098 development has been performance first.

Every system, every detail and every component has been studied and pared down to its essence in order to increase performance to the maximum. If it didn’t make the 1098 lighter, faster or deliver quicker lap times, it wasn’t considered.

The 1098 will be available in three versions starting in February. The 1098 Biposto will carry a manufacturers suggested retail price of $14,995. The 1098 S will be priced at $19,995, while the limited edition 1098 S Tri-Colore will be $24,995. The 1098 S Tri-Colore will feature a evocative red, white and green racing livery and a Termignoni performance exhaust system, among other performance enhancements.

Prices in Canada will be $19,995 for standard version, while the 1098 S will be $24,995 and the Tri-Colore will be $29,995.

“We are very pleased to announce not only a radical new Superbike family, but also a brand new competitive pricing structure. We have worked very long and hard to make this happen, and we are excited to introduce this motorcycle to the American public at the Seattle round of the International Motorcycle Shows, which happens December 1-3,” said Michael Lock, CEO of Ducati North America.

Crotch rockets are as gay as Harleys in their own way. :disgust1: More "mine is bigger than yours " strutting. Their weight/power/riding position would be just fine on the track but there's no way you can reasonably use the capability on the road.

One of the reasons I got out of motorcycles and back into bikes is that I can be as lunatic as I dare and I can't kill anybody but myself and I'm never going to get a ticket. Plus I could buy five or so really nice bicycles for the price of the least expensive toy mentioned above.

That Duc is pretty. Much nicer looking than the 999. That CB750 is just as sexy in it's own way too.

Kinda surprised you don't like this one better:

Oh wait...the flag in your avy and the one on this bike aren't the same. :imstupid:

Hey, maybe this will mean that all the rich guys who bought 999s will sell them off to buy this thing.
Really cheap.
To me.

Very sexy bike, but I'm not too keen on the V-twin thing. Ducati has the technology to make a better engine, and for such a beutiful bike they ought to.
Twins are the best. Nice smooth power and an awesome sound and i think alot of the beauty from the Ducatis is the very slim bike that you can't get with an I-4

that's what i was thinking :pirate2:

actually, i think my next bike will be either a RC51 or a Ducati Monster. i'm past my "faster than you" stage, i just want a fast bike that i can take to the blue ridge parkway and get horizontal.

I really want to get another monster. Sold mine a couple years ago and have wanted another since the newness of its replacement wore off. It was just a really nice do-it-all bike. Comfortable, fast enough to get around, handled great, had an awesome sound and look and so easy to do maintenance on.

True. I had a Ducati 900SS for a while, I loved it. I'm past the "look I can go 140mph in 3rd gear" (on my buddy's 998), and I do want a twin, and would prefer a Duc.
I'm thinking an older Monster 900 would be perfect for what I want. The RC51 is kind of a lot of bike compared to a Monster. Those things are blindingly fast, a bit too racer boy for me at least.
I think come spring, as soon as I ditch the POS car, I'll be looking for a bike. Not really worth commuting 5 miles to work on a Ducati though, that's the only stickler.

I got an 06 Monster Dark over the summer. I love the thing. It's the 620 not the new 695. I was kind of debating between the two, but ultimately decided for the 620. It's plenty of bike for me.

I'm glad they brought back the single sided rear end, even if it is less practical. If I hadn't just bought a Monster 1000 I would have to think about this.

My main problem with this is that the front end looks too much like an R1. And while a $14k price tag is nice (for a ducati) I miss the ducati styling. Or maybe I am just too in love with the 916/996/998 line to be able to get over them being replaced.
