So about a month ago I started interviewing for a data specialist position. I got called back for two interviews, the first one went well, and the second was just OK. So they told me I would hear something in one week. That was 3 weeks ago.

So since then, managers have gone on vacation and they have changed office locations. Because things were so hectic, I have waited around for three weeks to hear something. I got a call today saying that they had filled the position BUT might have something opening up at the end of the week and that I should know something by Monday.

I am pretty new to this whole trying to find a real job **** so I don't know, but the whole situation seems like bull****. They've been stringing me along for a month and now they are doing this. Maybe I am wrong and all hiring is run this haphazardly. Like I said, I'm new.

Yes, too often, that's how too many companies run the process.

And you should never wait for a job, always keep interviewing. If someone makes you an offer that's good enough, but you'd rather work at another company, call the other company and tell them such. They'll either jump at the chance to hire you or finally cut you loose.

sorry for your frustration

I was new too after 1/2 my life in the military cocoon and my first "real" job interview was just like that. 2 interviews, we'll let you know something, 6 weeks go by, I get another offer, have the courtesy to call them agian and ask what's going on and let them know I'm being offered, they never call me back, i take this job and 2 days later they call wanting me to start with them in 3 days and are pissed at me becuase I took another job!

If I had only tried harder and become a NASCAR driver......

When I was interviewing, I went to as many companies as I could. It can get hectic trying to keep up with them all but when you receive callbacks from a large number of firms/companies, you have the leverage and control in the situation. Generally, if they're serious about hiring you and you inform them that you have a limited amount of time before you take an offer somewhere else, they'll start following up.

Give them a break. I'm sure they've got lots of data to move.

Isn't IAB an HR guy? I'm sure he'll have some wisdom to lend. In a week or so, but don't call him, he'll call you.

edit: maybe LO is the HR guy...

It sucks but that doesn't sound unusual. You probably would have never heard a thing if not for the "other" position they are talking about. Companies only care about the person they are hiring. They don't care about contacting people they are not going to hire.

Oh, I am not waiting. I am still looking. I had just been putting off getting a stupid part time job in the process. So now I've been out of work for a over 2 months and it is seriously driving me insane. I'm just a little mifffed because I could have been working something this whole time, but I figured I would know about this full time position soon, so I've just been hanging out.

that's where crossover skills come in handy. It's like dating all over again :D
Haha, I was never good at that...highlighted by the fact that there is probably a fairly large constituency of women that would love a chance at Bobbitting my assets.

I interviewed 3 times for a position at a cool place to work before I got this lame ass job. I also had to do an online personality test.

They hired another person that worked there. They told me I was more qualified but that person would quit if they didn't get promoted.

Lame. The whole looking for a job thing is lame.

I'm going thru the same thing, went thru a second interview with the same manager and everything was peachy, had to do a 4 hour online personality and mechanical apptitude test. My recruiter called and said I flunked the personality test (?), then put me in touch with several other prospects that are actually another level higher than I was interviewing. Looking for real jobs sucks, but you need to aggressively follow up on the people because they're all flunkies too and don't really give a rat's ass at the end of the day.

do these credits work at wallmart? I need to buy some new underwear.

Yeah, I've taken a couple of personality tests for jobs. My results were that my personality profile doesn't match with the type they are looking for. Imagine that.

WTF ever happened to TALKING to a person and LISTENING to them and figuring this out in person?

You'd think they'd have someone with a good judge of character to do the hiring.

Because of lawsuits there are a lot of questions you can't ask without possibly getting into trouble, hence the stupid tests.

Whoever puts you though one of those tests should be sure to confiscate any matches or lighters you may have on your person. And stay out of arms' length.

I was involved in hiring two people for our dept at my last job. It wasn't rocket science.

After about 10 interviews for each position we picked two good people and they worked out great.

You can tell 10 minutes in if they are a good fit.

The only thing I hate more than moving is looking for a job. In my line of work, unless you have an offer in writing in hand, you have nothing. I learned that the hard way through being strung along and being told there was something in the works only to never see anything.

The only thing worse than interviewing off the street is being a contractor and then being told you will be brought on full time. Intel and Nike are famous for that. But that's how big companies roll.

Good luck on the continued search. Put the bad folks behind you and keep at it.

I'm in charge of hiring at the place I work.........I've gotten that 10 minutes down to 30 seconds. You hire the most energetic and personable people you can find--because eventually, everyone's level of production falls over time. So, if you hire a completely lazy sh*thead with no motivation, you can expect that to degenerate over time into something that just can barely manage breathing. However, if you hire the hyped up, bright-eyed candidate, you can expect that to mellow into an average worker you can count on to be there when you need 'em.

HR isn't pretty business....and you end up with a bit of a bitter streak when you constantly see and have to deal with workers who are brainless dolts who just want to collect a paycheck, and not give a sh*t about the big picture and taking pride in what you do......

Not me. In my experience every job move results in a 20% pay raise. :D
Good point, but I still hate the process. I also hate that my salary got cut in half and it took 8 years to now make what I made in 1999. a BSCS + 8 additional years experience = pre-bubble payday.

It took me 4 months to get a job one time. They hired me when I basically told them to shove it up their ass in a nice manner.

The moral here is, tell them to shove it up their ass. Immediately.
