i am a daily freerider with the occasional weekend downhill.

im having problems between choosing between a 66RC or a FOX40..

im thingking the FOX40 will be overkill for my riding style..although i got the budget for it im having second thoughts..

i feel that the 66RC would be a better choice for me..

please advice..

my Rig is SC bullit with DHX 5.0...

FOX40 would be good for the weekend downhill, but the 66RC would be better for freeriding (IMO).

In a Van(couver) down by the river
SC fork gives you a lot more multi-purpose flexibility (you can turn). The Fox sure is a nice fork though. If you are worried about raking out the head angle too much, why not wait until the new 66 comes out? (40mm shorter axle to crown )

I would go for the 40 since you can afford it. If after riding it for awhile you decide you want the SC than you can sell the 40 and buy a '06 66. I'm riding the 40 right now and it actually works pretty good for FR. You definitely don't sacrifice anything in the weight department w/ the 40 (infact the 66 might be heavier?), you only sacrifice a little flexibility in turning radius and tricks.

I agree - Get the 888 if you are thinking of a DC. If you really want a SC get the 06 66rc. I have the 05 66 and its tall... Its super nice on the DH and steep but its taking some getting used to on the techinal skinnies that you have to peddal up on.

Split the difference and get an 888. Butter.
dont like the 888 coz i dont want to have to buy lowering crowns wich will set me back $250..its out of my preferences..

My original choice was the Fox36RC2 VAN but since it wont come out anytime soon i was opting for the 40. But the 66RC is a Zoke and does have good ratings on it. I dont think I can wait for the '06 coz it would be more expensive. I am actually taking advantage of a good offer for a 66 that is why im considering it..

By the way, should i go 150mm or 170mm? why?

Thanks to all your inputs!

NORCAL is the hizzle
If you go with an '05 66, I'd say get the 150mm version, but only because the fork is so damn tall. The 170 on a bullit is pretty ridiculous IMO, way too slack and tall.

So you can aford the 40 but can't do the 888 with low riders? I think the 40 is still more expensive.

The Risse crowns are $150, and I think 888 will come with low crowns stock next year.

You do know that the 170mm 66 is taller than the stock 200m 888 right? So that should be out of your preference as well.

170mm 66 measures 595mm a/c

200mm 888 measures 605mm a/c

*so it is taller than the 170mm 888 but not the 200mm

oh crap, I was looking at the wrong a/c #. I looked at the a/c# when fork is compressed numbers. Gosh soooo stupid!

Maybe I can redeem myself here.

Fox 40 $1,299.99

888 $899.99 +150(lower crowns)=$1049.50

So the choice should be obvious. Buy the 888 get the crowns (if you really feel it a necesity) and with the money you save you can get yourself a couple days of riding at the local resort. Done deal end of discussion.

get the fox 40. I have ridden them both and think that the fox 40 felt alot smoother. I don't think that it will be over kill. I know, and have seen more people riding the fox 40 for freeriding. one of my friends is going to get the new V-10 with a fox 40 on it for freeriding, and that is a downhill bike.

i like the 66 because its SC, if i would go DC definitely i would go 40..that's my point..

because with a 888 with lower crowns i would be hitting $1000++ so i might as well go with the $1400 40RC2..

as i have said i am only considering the 66 becasue im being offered a good deal on it..

thats it end of discussion to you sir..

I thought that the 66 was internally adjustable between 150 and 170mm? If you're considering the 66 you should check out Marz's website cause I'm pretty sure the fork is adjustable.

I really like the way bullits feel with single crown forks. just feels like a pure freeride bike. you can do x-ups and stuff, but the 170mm is really tall for a bullit and if you're considering a fork as big as the 40, then you probably wouldn't want to drop the 66 to 150mm.

i think that the 66 looks better, so you must get that. haha jk... it all depends on if want to do x-ups, and have an unlimited turning radius, but it looks like the 40 might be a better option for you. Really nice fork.

Nobody's mentioned reliability. Fox forks tend to blow up, leak, and require maintainance much, much more than Marzocchis. A 66 will be like a set-it-and-forget-it thing, whereas the 40 will need more maintainance.

I think a 150mm 66 would be good. You could do more freeriding and trail riding with it without risk of breaking it, and it would be fine for DH use. A 40 would be more expensive, probably more likely to break/leak/blow up, and overkill. Save some money and go for the 66.

FOX blowing out? hmm..i rarely hear that..though I have had very good personal experiences with Zokes..

so hard to decide..

i do realize the advantage of an SC fork for freeride..hmm
