Those are rat snakes, it was the second time I saw and caught one on a ride at Ramapo (all the photos are of the second snake). They are all over the place there certain times of the year. Both were pretty big snakes...

They are usually on the side of the trail, but I've always loved catching animals and eating wild edible thing since I could walk. Non-venomous either way. Rattlesnakes can be found in pretty wide range in the US, those you don't want to grab on the trail
The Garter snakes aren't as fun to catch, they make a stink like dead animals as protection (worse than toads pissing on your hands)...

Nah but I've had grasshoppers, huhu grubs, frogs, snails, zebra, rabbits, deer, Thomson gazelle, wild boar, emu, ostriches, alligators...all sorts of good stuff
