They help. I'm racing DS tomorrow without one, we'll see how that goes.
edit: If you're going to brake a bunch, get a front brake because it gives you way more control over braking. Solely the rear brake isn't the best for braking perfectly. However if you're on courses that you don't brake much on, a rear brake will be ok. Either way a front brake gives you an advantage if you're racing.
I dont run a front brake on my DJ bike, and it works fine, but I have noticed it is harder to keep speed through tight berms as you can slow down quicker and snap them easier. It doesnt really make a lot of sense in words, but you'll get it once you start riding. For racing, I'd definetly run one, I guarantee you the advantages will compensate for the weight savings.
