im wondering what gearing i should use for dh? I want to use a road cassette but im not sure which one. all i know is i want it to be from the sram pg-970 road series. the gearing options are, 11-21T, 11-23T, 12-23T, and 12-26T. im not shure which one i want. Also what size ring would i run in the front with one of these cassets.

Hmm......well go short cage if possible.....or mid cage if you are running SRAM stuff.

Front ring all depends. 36t or 38t depending on course maybe? I'd probably get a 12-26t or 12-23t (either one should be fine) but alot of "gearing" questions resort to what you'll be running on.

For example our rocky trails here I'm not concerned with speed. So I run a 11-32 out back, with a 36t front. Gives me a few gears in which I can pedal easy to make it around obsticles. But if I could go faster I'd throw on a 40t or 42t ring and just haul down the trail. It just depends on what trails you'd be riding the most and how they are laid out.

on the steep Sh!t around here, I would go whatever in the rear (11-23) and smaller in front (36t) because everything is so tight and tech that its really hard to get a total haul going, than just get a 38 or 40 for when you go racing or to vail or whatever, Doesn't this snow suck? i was going to go digging today but its so cold and 6 inches of snow, just kind of sucks.

Just depends one how many ponies your personally have and the trail your on, not really one right answer. On flatter trails like fontana here i run a 11-21 with a 38T, places like Big Bear i'd run a 40 or 42 front.

Wow those are small front rings.

I just leave one on all season so for general Dh use I pic a 40T front and while I tried a 12-25 I'm going to be looking for something with a taller first, maybe up to 30, to give me more range.
