It's an a head type headset. I'd had it fitted in the shop and was fine but started to make a gritty sound. I just stripped it down, cleaned the bearings and cups. Couldn't see any damage. Repacked it and the gritty sound is still there. It turns smooth. Did some grit get in there again? Or could it be from somewhere else... like the bolt in the stem? Any thoughts?

Sounds like the dirt damaged the races a little.

If you're lucky only the bearings are bad. Try new balls and go from there.
