i figured this forum gets the most posts of go-pro vids...

who has a PC and is getting windows movie maker to play their MP4 raw footage...i cant seem to figure it out?

Im about half a step from chucking my laptop @ the wall and getting mac book but would pretty much rule out racing for the rest of the season...hence a pointless gopro HD cam that they just sent my way.

so point being? any tricks or other programs that might be useful?

HD (actually AVCHD) is always a bit troublesome, because you have to convert it into .avi-files to make them editable, which increases the file size enormously. this poses a problem to older comps, as you need a lot of RAM to handle this.
editing can be done in any editing software afterwards. i started editing with pinnacle 12, which was pretty awesome for me as a noob, because it's pretty intuitive to work with.
now i'm on SONY VEGAS, which is also pretty nice to work with.
NON HD vids can be edited straight away, no need to convert.
.mp4-files are best watched quicktime

Vegas or Adobe Premier + After effects are the best on the PC.
What are you using at the moment?

edit: just saw Windows movie maker : Its very basic and I haven't used it for HD footage before

Not necessarily. You just need to match a format that your software supports.
I haven't edited an .avi file in years.

Hey mikey: That format the gopro uses is pretty commonplace these days. Make sure you've got the latest version of movie maker........as in just update it within the program or go to the microsoft site and get the current version. I'd be surprised if h.264/mp4 isn't supported at this point.

Let me know if that doesn't work. There are some other free options out there if it doesn't.

edit: and yeah, quicktime and any recent version of windows media player should work to just view your clips and see what you want to keep

I had this problem a little while ago and I have been using Corel SutdioPro with great success on my Contour HD. It was only $99.

windows movie maker (at least for XP) doesn't support HD. Download the trial version of some of the above programs and try them. If you want just basic editing, quicktime pro will do it. I would advise premier. That said, you need a fast computer. My home computer will not do it. Need a new one. My work computer is plenty fast (CAD laptop workstation) however, the IT policies have made it difficult to install software.

I am actuallly considering a Mac. It would be hard to do since I have been PC for so long but I am really getting tired of spending hours and hours trying to keep my OS stable.

I have a mac mini and run XP on it via Bootcamp, which is no longer supported. Now they have a way better option called Paralells (IIRC) where you can run both OS and toggle between them. (I have to reboot in order to switch between the two.) Mac hardware runs Windows really well, btw.

For my GoPro HD, I've been using Quicktime Pro, and it works okay. But when I try to upload any kind of multi-edited piece of footy to Vimeo or YouPorn....err....YouTube, the uploaded/edited file is not what I previewed/edited in Quicktime. I don't get it. So lately I have given up on it until GoPro releases the new firmware fix (as one of my issues is I have to record upside down for chesty cam, then flip it via SW, and that is one of my issues. W/ Vimeo, it'll show my edited video upside down, even tho I rotated it via SW.) Lame....

What's the video editing sw choice for Mac? Besides iMovie?

"HD" is a resolution size. Windows movie maker does support 'HD'. I've used it on an xp machine. (mp2)

The version you have on XP may not be current enough to handle some h.264 or avchd formats but to say that it doesn't support 'HD' is a little misleading.

Current"ish" versions of movie maker should come with the required codecs to handle mp4s. If your version doesn't, you can either get the lastest version or download a series of codecs that should enable the program to read the files.

Here's one way to go about it.

edit: that 'k-lite' codec pack has a shlt ton of codecs in it. There's probably not much that isn't addressed.
