Hey,
I am writing a paper on the history of downhill. I was wondering if anyone knows of any good sites and source to get some info? like info on the Klunker days racing down the fire roads, also info on the first world cup race in Durango in 1990, NORBA and any other info? Pictures of the old Klunkers and any other pic would be great.

Thanks for the help!

Try to contact Ed Zink from the mountain bike specialists in Durango. He loves to talk about this topic and I'm sure would be stoked to chat with you. I honestly don't think anyone has more memorabilia and knowledge on the topic than he does. (Literally he has an entire barn filled with old banners, bikes, posters... ect).

Feel free to email me with any questions, if I can help with your paper. I worked in the race scene from late 80's till 2004. I can offer you some info on bikes, people, races, etc...

I actually did a school research paper on DH racing last year and it was actually harder to find enough info for the 8 pages my paper had to be but it was still a enjoyable paper to write.

If you have seen my website, it should be no trouble to fill eight pages. Downhill racing is a rich subject with dozens of interesting avenues of discussion.

History and its impact on the bicycle market
Development of the bikes
Development of "official" competition
Offshoots: 4X, slalom, pump tracks
The "marketing" of DH

How could you CONFINE yourself to only eight pages?

So a friend was telling me that the origin of downhill mountain biking goes like this: some friends would go up a hill in the woods to smoke their pot and get away from everyone else and would ride their old cruisers back down. This eventually turned into this group of guys racing back down the hill and pushing their bikes further.
^^True Or False^^

Highly oversimplified, but that has elements of truth in it.

At no time in the history of bicycling did a group leaving the top of a hill not race down it.

I'll be taking a buddy of mine down Repack for his first time today - after Tamarancho/Pine Mountain/Paradigm. We'll be on 35lb bikes; can't wait to see him balled up in a cramping/crying heap on the climb out.
