how delicate is a carbon wrapped post?

I put a pretty good scratch in my seatpost last week (don't ask). It's definitely through the finish and into the material (I can see silver and feel it with my fingernail). It's on my Specialized Roubaix, post is described as "carbon wrapped".

Should I be worried about riding on it? I've heard horror stories about carbon giving way with the slightest scuff/scratch, but I'm assuming that "carbon wrapped" means there is some kind of alloy under the carbon?

I worry about the overuse of carbon in low to midrange bikes.

A seatpost is a perfect example. An alu seatpost is just a few grams heavier and a way more reliable, but every $2000-3000 will have a "carbon" seatpost.

If it looks nicked up, just get a Ritchey Pro. I bet they are about $40 and it won't break.

That post has cosmetic carbon only, AL underneath. You have nothing to worry about, unless "good scratch" means "I accidentally attacked my bike with a sawzall"
