there is basically no good route to kirkwood from truckee unless it hasnt snowed in a while, 89 isnt plowed by emerald bay, and i think whatever the connecter is from south lake to 88 also isnt plowed regularly.
You gotta take 88 east to 89 north and that'll get you to South Lake, then continue on 89 and it'll take you all the way around the west shore of the lake. Once you get to Tahoe City, take a left and stay on 89, which will take you past Alpine Meadows and Squaw Valley and then dump you straight in the middle of Truckee, right at the interchange with I-80.
Those are directions from Kirkwood to truckee right? I'll flip them around - think I got it. Is 88 and 89 open? How long should I expect the trip to take? 1-2 hours?
About that, its kinda too long of a ride unless you're hitting Kirkwood on the way home. If you want to go there for the day and go back to truckee.......I wouldn't.
True. Long drive. But hey.......it IS kirkwood. Take dexter20's directions in reverse. Caltrans DOES plow emerald bay but as you can imagine, they're pretty busy with other things right now.
It's closed right now, probably will be for a few days.
Okay, new directions. From truckee go over 267 by northstar into kings beach. Turn left onto north lake blvd. Cross the state line by the casinos, stay on this road as it curves right and heads down the east shore. Turn right at the junction of US50 following the signs to south lake tahoe. Stay on this road for a while and slow the fvck down when you are about to enter a tunnel, it's icy as hell. Once you get into the hell that is south shore, right after you cross the stateline and all the big casinos, keep an eye out for Pioneer trail rd. on your left. Go there. Follow that for a ways until it dead ends into 89 south. Turn left. After an agricultural inspection station look on your left for 89/88 south. Turn left. Stay on this road up over luther pass (wince at how much snow in on the climb to mr. toad's) until it hits 88. Turn right. Kirkwood is on your left.
Kidwoo's directions are the better set in sketchy weather. West side of Tahoe (Emerald Bay) is considered a secondary route, and there are a couple big avalanche zones that can shut down the road. Less traffic that way, though, IF the road is open.
If you're going to do it, leave early, do the Kings Beach route, don't miss that turnoff at Stateline for Pioneer Trail, and check road conditions. There are a couple big passes between South Lake Tahoe and Kirkwood.
Man I've been stuck in some heinous conditions going to and from Kirkwood, but I always thought it was worth it.
One time the conditions were so bad coming home, it took me eight hours to get back to the bay area. Not to mention my truck was totally packed. 6 smelly ass dudes in the cab of my tacoma...those extended cab seats aren't even really seats..sucked for them hahaha.
The post rom Craw reminded me of a not so great trip to K-wood. Drove over from south lake Tahoe, and the whole upper mountain was shut down due to high winds. Kinda sucked.
Hit up sugarbowl again today. Absolutely awesome conditions. It was warm but no slush, the groomed runs were uber fast, and there was plenty of fresh light pow pow to be found. Hope you had fun D. I was going to head to Kirkwood but I got into Sugarbowl for free again. Sucker!
I live in Jackson and Kirkwood is the only resort I go to. Gotta hit the backside -- less people and great runs. If you ever wanna hook up, shoot me an email...
