I'm heading back to the hardtail and was wondering if anyone is running a hub gear on their 4x bikes? What is the weight comparison like, i.e. 1 hub gear instead of normal hub, rear mech and chain device?

I like the clean looks of a bike with no mech and the silence.

Are you talking about possibly running an internally geared up like a shimano Alfine? I've been wanting to try one on a hardtail, but they are not designed to shift under load (your supposed to stop pedaling when you shift). Therefore, they probably wouldnt work at all for 4x really.

Hub gears are heavy as hell, shift slowly and are going to blow up in the gate.
Avoid. They are awesome for commuting though.
