Before hops grew popular, herbs and spices were used as preservatives, mainly to allow the beer to last through the winter. It's interesting that seasonal winter brews still often go that route.

I want to try that. In general though, I am not a fan of the seasonals. Honey, nutmeg... and whatever else just doesn't taste like beer to me. The only seasonals I wait for are October Fest's and Harpoon Hibernian.
