1981 Nissan Bluebird

Never liked going over 80 km/h (50 mph)
No A/C, and then the fan shat itself so I had nothing but the window.
Water came in when it rained, the trunk was always wet
No reverse lights
Used so much oil as it smoked a fair bit
You could start it with a screwdriver
Smoke started coming into the car through the vents, so I just closed them and left it.
Brakes were a disgrace
It had so much rust that I paid a mechanic $100 cash every year to pass it.
And the front shocks bottomed out all the time, I just cringed everytime I heard it .

I think owning an older car really does make you appreciate a newer car. I'm not saying I'm jealous about a 16 year old getting a new car, good luck to him, I'm just saying when you fix your own rust, wiring and bits and pieces it's a good lesson early in life. Just doing a bodgie fix to get home, or saving up money for a full service, is a good experience early on. Nice ute by the way, you're a lucky guy with generous parents!

What since last week. When you see a classic car that you once owned new... Then you have been driving awhile.

1981 AMC Spirit. With many options, including the little wing/spoiler on the hatchback, but no twingrip rear end. Automatic too. It would stall every time I drove over the train tracks near my house. But I could do donuts and smokeshows all day long. Its funny how I can get nostalgic over something that brought me much grief.

My first was an 85 T-bird with the 3.8 Liter V-6. Worked approximately 1200 hours at minimum wage to save up for that lump. It was actually a decent car, I had to get rid of it when oil was leaking out of every seal on the car, I could have fixed it for $500 or buy a newer POS for $400. To its credit the seals went because it would actually start when it was 25 degrees below 0. The seals just all broke from the cold.

'74 toyota celica. hand-down from my mom. sold it when after leaving college (i left it home; my college was in a city, so i didn't need a car (but kept it for the summers). i had direct bus service if i wanted to get home).

didn't get my next car until two years out of college (again, lived and worked in a city, just took the bus and/or subway to work). '86 ford escort. i was stylin' .

1st new car i ever got was a '96 honda civic, which i bought when i moved out of boston.

kids these days (i'm willing to bet that 75% of the high school/college students on RM have a nicer car than me)....america is getting soft.

:stupid:

I keep hearing people saying I NEED xxxxx (<-insert latest gadget, car, fashion item etc). People need food and shelter, but want much more and confuse their wants as actual needs.

i had 3 different vehicles before i graduated high school. first was an 8yr old Dodge Dakota that had no a/c or heater (which ****ing sucks in TX). within a year, i had sunk way too much money into it. prior to being my first vehicle, it was my dad's work truck. i.e. it was beat to hell, but it was free, so i couldn't complain. it got me around while i saved for...

second was a 6yr old Jeep Cherokee. paid it off within a year, then sold it to a friend. then, on August 7, 1999...

my first new vehicle arrived. 1999 Tacoma. i put down about $7000 of my own money, mom helped me out with some inheritance money, and i paid the final $6 or $7K. man, it was nice living at home and being in high school. i could drop $400 monthly payments easily. parnets paid my insurance, and i paid for everything else.
