new computer in pieces.... I'll take a pic tonight. I'm heated though because the heat sink I had to order from someone other than newegg.com and it won't be here till next week. Otherwise everything will be at my door in less than 1 week.

To what extent are you building it? Did you order a case, MB, processor, memory, the works? Or are you just swapping in a new HD and processor?

Choice A

This is the basic specs:
64 bit AMD processor
200gig HD
128meg Video Card
17" flat screen
I spent $48 on the heat sink alone.

hey stosh - what do you recommend for an internal DVD burner? i'm gonna go w/ one which can do both - and + formats, but then the dual layer caught my eye. however, it seems really slow (you can burn 2 regular DVDs in much less time than burning one dual layer disc).

the brands i am looking at are sony (Model#: DRU710A) and plextor (Model#: PX-712A BLACK)

thoughts?

I bought a DVD ROM and a DVD RW however I just got cheap ones to keep the cost down figuring I would upgrade later. I'm not very familiar with all the different versions.

Go for speed if you don't need the capacity or the "burn a whole DVD at once" capability of the dual layer.

The Sony is sweet, and probably cheaper than the Plextor.

EDIT:

*WAIT - scratch that - get the Plextor - $30 rebate, free shipping:

I run XP myself, but I have an honest to goodness, not pirated (Arrrgh!) Legitimate copy of Win 2K if you want it. It's not doing much but making my bookshelf look all techy. Thought about running Linux? It's free.

Gig of RAM = :thumb: I run a gig of DDR333 ram on my AMD box at home. that sucker flies!

I DL'd the program thanks.
The nice thing about that little program is you can set it to test the card as it ups the clock just a tiny bit at a time. It'll ratchet back down if it gets errors. This let's you o'clock to the max stable speed. You can let it run overnight and in the morning you have a good limit to work with.

Damn handy.

There's a reason companies love Dell so much - the mobos won't let dumbass employees fry their machines.

But you'd know better than to do that, right?
