So here's the deal. I live on the east coast (MA to be exact), and am doing a road trip this summer with a friend. We plan to be in Montana, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and BC, and spending a week in Colorado as well. The primary purpose of the trip? To ride as much as possible, see new places, meet new people, and maybe find a town to move to next year when I'm done with college.

So, we're trying to start doing some planning and figure out a route and where we're going to go, which is largely dictated by where we'll ride. We'll be drifting around for most of July. I'm on a Turner 6 pack, he's on a Kona Stinky. We ride mainly all mountain stuff. The more technical, the better. If there are drops and jumps along the trail, great, but it's not absolutely necessary.

I realize this is a pretty broad and vague question, but as I said, we've never been out in that neck of the woods before and need some suggestions. Any guidance people can start to offer me is helpful, then perhaps I can start asking more specific questions.

Thanks!

Hey,
I live in oregon and there are many good areas to ride within an hour of the main city of Portland, One on my favorites being Post Canyon (a all mountain, freeride and some techy downhill stuff. Located in a little town on the columbia river named Hood River.) There is also a mainly freeride area south of portland about 1 and 1/2 hours Called Falls City or Blackrock. This are consits of ladders jumps trails wallrides you name they have it.
Here are some pics of some of the places:
POST CANYON:

Where's Kanter at? He'll have some good stuff from Montana, Idaho, and Eastern Wa. I know of Silver Mt. in northern Idaho and Beacon Hill, which in east Spokane.

Post Canyon and Blackrock are the best spots I have been to besides whistler and north shore. If you come to Seattle, south sea-tac flow park or softies dirt jump is worth cheaking out. If you are into bigger technical stuff theres are some less, ah, knowen trails around here. P.M. me if you want more info, if I am in town and have the day off I would love to show you around.

If I was you I would spend more time in canada and go to Kamloops, Woodlot, North Shore, Squamish, Pemberton, or Galbraith(in Belingham WA near the boarder), You will find the better trails there.

Skookum regularly takes people on rides....but I have it on good authrority that once you're out in the middle of nowhere he will murder you and steal all of the change in your pockets and then place your corpse in an embarassing pose.

Thanks for the tips guys, especially MMike ;). Skookum, I'll definitely be PM'ing you soon.

Fuzzy and MTBfree- Those trails look sick. The jumps are a bit bigger than I'm used to, and we're more on the XC side kind of all-mountain riders, but I definitely wouldn't mind checking out the trails.
The reason we're not spending more time in Canada is because we want to see as many places as possible. But who knows, we may find an area we really like a spend a week there.

This is true...he's done it to me on several occasions. :hot: Some of the best rides I've ever been on.

Yah that was cool when we stacked all those dead bodies on that lip in the gravity bowl. Man you jumped over 5 of em. That sucked when that dudes arm got stuck in your chain though, what a mess! haha.:)

Good times good times.

Smelly, try to give a ring when you're closer to WA and we'll be better able to suggest what's melted out by then. it's been a big snow year and though it's warm and sunny today, it will take a loong time to melt out. Then, the forest service has to get out there and log it all out. If you don't mind pedaling up, there's lots of good suggestions for WA trail sampling. If you have 3-4 days here, I'd recommend the following:

Devils Gulch up/Mission Ridge down
Dungeness River up/Gold Creek Down
Crystal Mountain loop (CCW, up Northway)
Mount St. Helens: Ape Canyon/Windy Ridge Day 1 and Lewis River Day 2.

You can Google tons of info on these rides.
