Imperial Units...WTF?

...I still find it odd how mixed and random the units are for bikes. All fasteners are metric, yet other dimensions are mixed. For example handlebars come in 31.8mm = 1-1/4" and 25.4mm = 1", yet steerer tubes are still measured in inches. Then seat posts come in all sorts of random metric sizes that don't convert to inches. Why 30.9 instead of 31?
As an engineer, I use whatever units the job at hand requires.

31.9 mm is probably an internal diameter for a commonly available metal tubing size.

We're just cooler than the rest of the world. I blame it on porn. When porn stars start describing their units in centimeters, then maybe we might climb on board... 12cm sounds more impressive anyways. Will Subway start selling 30.5 longs...

distance measurements are straightforward no matter the system. 'Merican units get real ugly when power and energy get involved, especially with electro-mechanical systems. How many ounce force inches in a Calorie?

My own world inside my head
I find that I am mostly using metric on vehicles these days as most all cars/trucks have gone that way<yes even good Ole 'Merican>. Every once and awhile I get an older American made vehicle that is standard, and I still get alot of late 80 to late 90's that are a wild ass mix of both. Its best to know both but what people are saying about the machinery is true, specially for large parts. Small nutts and bolts no problem getting them in metric, but you want anything larger than a 14MM and it starts getting tough. To top it off try finding a good assortment of case hardended Metric fastners.... thats a toughie

My gym weights kg's and lbs. Good thing I have a metric converter.
I only work out in metric. I picked up a metric bowflex in Moldova, and my workout intensity went through the roof - once you go metric, you'll never go back.
