neither here nor there
you can with eph pod. do a google for that or a search on download.com

you're not supposed to be able to. some of their feeble efforts to keep exactly what you're doing to a minimun.

Browse into your iPod, and in the Windows folder view options, find and enable 'show hidden folders'. Then browse your iPod and you can find the files, but they'll all be named four digit numbers. Drag them onto your Fiancee's PC, and then change that folder to 'view - details'. (If it's not already) Then right click on the bar at the top of the folder with 'name' and so on and add 'track name', 'artist' and so on and sort by those fields.

Shoulda bought an iRiver. :)

Dunno. It might not even accept them. I've never tried that. It might depend what rights management is tagged onto the files and where you got the tracks from in the first place. Ask Toshi about that.

Edit: I think you can do it actually from a quick look at apple.

if you ripped them yourself or d/led them then you'll be fine. if you bought them from the iTunes Music Store you'll be fine as well: you're allowed to authorize 3 computers to play tracks you buy, and when you try to play the track in itunes on your fiance's computer for the first time it'll ask you to authorize. (or if this is a problem, like it's the 4th computer you're trying to authorize, you could burn the tracks in question to a disc and then rerip, then put these reripped tracks on the ipod. voila, no more drm.)

I don't think anyone has discussed anything illegal, just how to do what Apples license for the music allows in a different way. Nobody wants to redown load gigs of music or spend hours re-riping cd's, and some people don't have home networks to facilitate transfering large volumes of music.

if you're on a mac, you can use software like podworks. there are a bunch of others as well. search on VERSIONTRACKER.COM - there are also PC ones listed there

DRM is the devil.

just say no to iTunes.
you have to admit apple's drm is far less draconian than that of other vendors: authorize 3 computers at any one time (as in you can deauthorize one, authorize another), burn 10 drm-less cd copies of a playlist (then just alter the order and you can burn 10 more ad infinitum -- this is just to prevent mass burning/reproduction).

Watchin' you. Writing it all down.
Anapod by RedChair Software will let you do this. It can be set up in the sync to transfer files from the IPOD to the computer that aren't present. The software isn't free but they are constantly making updates and those are free.

Yeah, it's pretty damn reasonable. The only people who will be complaining are those who abuse them anyway.

what about 3rd party stuff like Squeezebox (basically a wireless device which attaches to yr stereo, has extremely good output quality, and can also play streaming net broadcasts)? you can't play iTunes stuff because of the DRM.

yeah, there's airtunes, but it's not to the same level of audio sophistication.

a) that's squeezebox's problem, not apple's
b) you could always burn to CD and rerip

well it's apple's problem if a consumer wants to use a top-end music streamer and can't access the stuff on his PC he's bought from iTunes via Apple.

burning a compressed file to wave then re-ripping loses fidelity. it's like re-saving a jpg as a jpg.

lossy is lossy, mang.

I did this with music from a friends ipod. it was simpler than i thought and didn't have manually enter a thing. The only downside is that it is ALL of the files or nothing. Once you get it into the pc you can delete as necessary.

Step1)
like before mentioned, tell explorer to show hidden files and navigate to your ipod. Go to the folder (directory) that has all of the "F00" type folders within it. Copy that directory with all of the files in it and paste it into the desired folder on your pc.

Step2)
open itunes if you have it, or download it. Click "file" then "add folder" and navigate to the folder with all of the "F00" folders in it. After a short pause (at least on my lappy) itunes will automatically proceed to add and reorganize all of the files to your itunes library. it renames all of the folders by artist. voila, now you can browse the files in explorer by artist. (you may have to play with the itunes settings but at least you know there is a way).

Hope this helps.

if you really wanted to remove the DRM _solely for your own use since it preserves the Apple ID you bought it with_ there are tools out there.

you can. but the songs that your ipod actually plays are in invisible folders. read above or use ephpod or the like.

can you do what hoowah is talking about on both mac and windows or is it just windows?
just use one of the GUI apps listed above if you have a mac but don't know cp from rm in the terminal...
