I'm looking for a new light set of wheels with a 12mm rear hub for under 500 dollars? Any suggestions. Just trying to cut some weight off my bike.

Azonic Outlaws. Not the lightest, but one of the few quality wheelsets in that pricerange. I think Transition makes a good set for a close price.

Would be right around $500 even. And I think you can find the hubset for $350 if you find some deals. The Hope's are a little cheaper even. $30/rim and enough left over for spokes.

been looking at these for 199 at pricepoint
Link
Not super light, but 2,360g for that price with a 12mm rear & 20mm front on a 31mm rim aint bad.

Transition's 32mm wheelset offering is $319 and 2,510g for comparison.

Azonic Outlaws at $250 get you 2,550g

pricepoint also showing hope rear hubs at $225 and front at $95 = $320.

Money for rims, spokes and a build.

edit - 721s are $75 each at pricepoint ($85 msrp) so that would eat the remaining $180 quick. Rhyno Lites are similar weight but $25 each..

Custom wheel build at Chain Reaction Cycles, you can price out any of these combos. You have to go to each item to check weight though.

Simply don't get a hope front. If you're on a budget get a WTB, DMR or some other lighter hub for the front. They are not rocket science anyway so what's the differance and if you are a fasion freak and want them the same colour you can later ano the front one to match the rear hope.

I would get a Hope front over a WTB front any day. Not that I'm a big fan of either of them, but the WTB hubs in general are pure garbage.

Simply hope front costs more than some of the cheaper hubs and the weight differance is minimal if any so why pay for it? Especialy if they are designed by the same guy who claims to have designed brakes in 2 days or sth

Hope/DT Swiss 5.1s under 2000g
Hope/DT Swiss 4.2s under 1800g

Because they don't wobble around?? There's more to it than weight...

Yes, they don't but don't tell me that all cheaper hubs do? Like I've said it's not rocket science and there are many front hubs that are much cheaper than hope that do their job. Ie. my syncros (though they are not that light) or most of the cheaper hubs my friends use. Keep in mind that the OP is looking for sth under a certain budget.

Hope's laced to 721's w/butted spokes are around 330 shipped from CRC and weigh roughly 2100 grams. You absolutely can't beat that for the money. There are no problems with the hope front hubs, a few years ago some of the rears cracked in half but that has been solved to my knowledge.

WTB's went through the roof expensive for no understandable reason, they now cost about the same wholesale as a set of hadleys or ~70$ more wholesale than a set of Hope's. To top it off their engagement is terrible and spotty. I have a set solely because I bought the rear 150mm for 5$ w/cracked freehub body at a bike swap. Even after getting a new freehub body while working at a shop the hub was dirt cheap. I'm going to get a set of those Hope/721's this summer so I don't have to deal with the WTB's daily.

DT Swiss wheels are not that bad. My 5.1s are still perfect, but I run higher pressures. My wifes 4.2s are still perfect too. DT Swiss rims are not for people who like to run lower pressures.

You can order a set of Hope/Maic 721s for under $500 delivered too, but the DT Swiss would be lighter.

I've seen sets of the DT rims be completely done in a single hard DH run around here. Followed by some rabidly pissed owners.

yeah, looks like CRC's pro2 on 521 with butted spokes will run you about $350, which is a heck of a deal if you like hopes and want to save weight.

I'm one of those pissed owners. I've killed a 6.1 rim in around 1 week of riding on an insanely smooth trail (think aline) and not even one flat landing. At some point the tire decided that the rim isn't the place it wanted to be at the moment and took a hike on a lip of a jump. I still don't know how the hell my tube survived the landing.
